“ Brand: Yankee Candle / Type: Candle / Category: Home Fragrance „
I have been meaning to review the Yankee Candle Mountain Pine fragrance for a while, but never quite got round to it. The Mountain Pine fragrance was the first ever Yankee scent that I bought in the form of tea lights, although I have since bought others. It was my fiancé who really liked the scent of Mountain Pine - I can take or leave pine scents myself and of course there is always that association of pine and toilet cleaner!
The tea lights come in a box of twelve and the box is adorned with a picture of snowy mountains and forest pines as you would probably expect from something with a name like Mountain Pine! I've got the box in front of me and am quite surprised to see that this fragrance is actually part of the festive range. I had thought that it was just part of their normal, everyday range, as although I associate pine with winter, I personally don't feel that this is a scent that can only be used at Christmas.
On removing the tea lights from the box, they look rather unusual. For a start they come in little clear plastic cups, rather than the aluminium holders you would normally expect. I have also noticed that the base of the holders have teeny little 'feet' so that they don't actually touch the surface that they are standing on (although you should of course always place them somewhere heat proof). The wax in the candles is dark green and the shiny surfaces of the wax have lots of bubbles in them - something I have occasionally noticed with the jar candles I've bought from Yankee.
The wicks of the tea lights are flattened down slightly, so I have to pull them up before lighting. Once lit, I have found that the tea lights burn incredibly slowly - much slower than any other brand of tea lights I have tried and the gentle flicker of the flame helps create a cosy atmosphere. Like the Yankee Candle jars it pays to let them burn until all the surface wax is melted. If you don't, the next time you burn the tea light, it will burn straight down leaving a ring of un-melted wax around the edge.
I found the scent of the candles to be quite strong when removing them from the box. They have a strong pine fragrance, which has certain sharpness to it, but I thought it was reasonably pleasant and thankfully I didn't think it had that toilet cleaner aroma I had worried about! I actually thought it smelled quite fresh and natural - it was quite rural where I grew up and we had to walk through woods to get to school. The smell brought back memories of walking down those little pathways in winter.
When I first tried these candles, I lit two at once. I was incredibly disappointed to find that even after an hour of burning them I could barely smell the candles at all. There was a very faint hint of pine but I could only really detect that when I moved up close to where the candles were burning. The second time I burned these, I decided to burn three instead of just the two. This seemed to improve things and I could smell the aroma of pine in the whole room, however it was still quite weak, which is not what I have come to expect from Yankee Candle.
The burn time of each candle is 4-6 hours. I haven't been counting, but I'd say from those tea lights I've used so far, I've found that these have lasted towards the 6 hour mark, which is fairly impressive as tea lights go.
I paid just £2.99 for my box of tea lights from Boundary Mill in one of their sales. That wasn't a bad price really considering the RRP is £5.99. The fragrance is also available in the form of wax tarts, votives, tumblers and house warmer jars. Online buy from www.yankeedirect.com or Clinton Cards on the high street.
To sum up, whilst I do like the scent of Mountain Pine and think it is probably one of the better pine fragrances around, I would not buy it again in the form of tea lights. The scent was way too gentle and only clearly noticeable when I had multiple candles lit. So, whilst I wouldn't rule out using the fragrance again, I would choose another format.
Yankee candle Mountain Pine Sampler
I have now tried a few yankee candles and on the whole I actually love them. They seem to be of a high quality and I think the samplers would make great stocking fillers - but this one unfortunately will not be one I will be buying again.
- About the product
I have been buying all of the yankee candle scents in sampler form as they are quite cheap and I can buy a lot of them with my amazon voucher. Also the samplers are a fantastic way of trying out a lot of different scents without spending a lot of money. The samplers are 49g each and they come wrapped in clear plastic with an image on the front. The mountain pine sampler had pine tress on as you would expect and the image just makes me think of an American forest with the clear blue sky. The candle itself was a dark green colour, which looked really christmasy.
I was expecting the scent of this sampler to be very woody but in my opinion it is not. The main scent I can smell is a minty/spearmint scent but it very refreshing and reminiscent of winter and snow but it is not the nicest scent from yankee candle that I have tried. The scent to me just smells like a pine car air freshener - the artificial car air fresher and mint. Obviously if you like minty scented things...or car air freshener scent things, then you will like this scent but I personally do not really like minty scents at all - although it is still a really nice candle and is very nice to use now that it is autumn, nearly winter.
- Using the candle - burn time and scent dispersion
I lit the candle with a normal cooking match and it took about 20 minutes for me to fully smell the candle in the small(ish) room in which the candle and I were located. The scent is dispersed well but it did take about half and hour to 45 minutes for the scent to fully disperse through out the room, which was a little bit disappointing as all of the other yankee candle samplers have had strong scents that dispersed quickly and filled the room with fragrance. While the candle was burning it looked nice, as all candle do as the candle burning creates a nice, warm and cosy atmosphere but the scent was not very strong - the only way I could get a good sense of the scent was to go out of the room for a couple of minutes and then go back into the room with the candle. Although the burn time of the candle kind of makes up for the slow dispersion and weak/subtle scent as this candle burned for ages! The other samplers I have used have burned for about 9 to 10 hours or so but this candle burned for about 12 to 13 hours which was amazing - this may be due to the candle itself as it may melt slower than the others or it may be due to the glass sampler holder that I have. Overall, the scent is ok but it is a little bit too much like a minty/pine car air freshener and it takes a while for the scent to disperse around the room and even then the scent is subtle. Although the positive point is that the candle burns for ages - quite a bit longer than the other samplers I have burned.
- Price and availability
I bought this candle from amazon.co.uk with my dooyoo voucher, this candle cost me about £2.60 - as all of the samplers on amazon are priced between £2.50 to £2.75 (with postage). These yankee candle samplers can be bought from yankee doodle or yankee direct as well (and ebay).
*Nice packaging and colour
*Burned for ages!
*Cheap - £2.60 from amazon and fairly widely available
*Scent was too car air freshener like for me - it was not as woody scented as I expected and I would have liked it to have a more woody scent
*The scent was not very strong and it dispersed slowly
i burn this year round it is a fresh clean scent that is very natural ....stock up you wont be disappointed
Anyone who may have read some of my earlier reviews (please accept my thanks, I am really grateful for all reads, rates and comments!) will already know that I am a massive fan of the Yankee Candle company and spend quite a lot of money on them too. This Christmas, I was really lucky as quite a few people bought me candles and wax tarts, including some fragrances which I hadn't tried before. These Mountain Pine wax tarts are one of the ones that I hadn't tried before.
In case you are new to the Yankee Candle company, let me tell you a little about them. They sell the most amazing scented candles (along with a variety of other products designed to scent your rooms and also your car) to gently scent your home. These candles are significantly better than most other brands because they last really well and continue to smell great right until the end, unlike some scented candles which only smell the first time that they are lit. No matter what size candle you buy, you can be assured that it will smell great right until it is finished, so although these are not the cheapest brand, in my opinion, they are worth paying extra for.
In case you are also unsure what these wax tarts actually are, they are little tart shaped pieces of scented wax. They are then used with the specially designed wax tart burner which uses a tealight to melt the wax, releasing the delicious fragrance into your home. They are very easy to use and despite being small, they really are quite potent, so your rooms will be filled with their scent. If you don't have a special burner, you can break these up and use them in an ordinary oil burner too.
These wax tarts cost around £1.05 so are much cheaper than the big glass candle jars, meaning that this can be a good way to try different scents without spending a lot. If you are new to the company then the wax tarts or their scented tealights are a great way to try the scents and find your favourites. They are available to buy in loads of different places and you can also shop online.
These tarts will last around 8 hours and have a very strong smell. I was actually extremely disappointed with the fragrance as I generally love their scents. There is a previous review on here which likens the smell to pine toilet cleaner, and I have to admit that is a pretty apt description!
I had expected that this fragrance would be fresh, herbal and delicious and was surprised by how unnatural it actually smells. Being the Yankee Candle company, the fragrance lasts for ages in your rooms and I ended up opening a window for fresh air as I disliked the smell so much.
I would definitely not buy this scent again and am really glad that I didn't receive a full sized candle as it would have been wasted. There are some amazing fragrances in this range but sadly, this just isn't one of them so best avoided at all costs!
Another review and another Yankee Candle wax tart. This time I moved away from fruit based aromas and last night we melted this "Mountain Pine" tart. I was a little dubious at start with this one as I imagined the smell would remind me of toilet cleaner (which is never a good smell) but as it came free in the sample pack I bought at Christmas we decided to give it a go.
Dark green in appearance and measuring the usual 6cm by 2cm this has no fragrance at all when removed from its clear wrapper. After 10 or so minutes the wax had just about melted and from the runny liquid came a gentle pine smell. Fresh and clean in aroma with just an underlying hint of pine this fragrance lingered quite nicely for a while.
After 30 or 40 minutes I have to admit that the pine smell did become a little sharp and indeed reminded me of a toilet and bathroom cleaner which was a shame really, for a scent to have wafting around a living room it didn't quite fit in and probably would suit a kitchen or bathroom more.
I wasn't disappointed with this, after all it gave off the aroma I was expecting and like the other wax tarts from Yankee Candle was a quality item. It just didn't fit in to our surroundings so wouldn't be a fragrance that I would buy again in the future.
As mentioned before this to me is the good thing about Yankee Candle wax tarts as you able sample the flavours for very little outlay before deciding whether to purchase them again in the future in a more expensive form.
Mountain Pine would probably suit those who like to burn a candle in their bathroom, and for that purpose it would fill the room with a fresh, clean scent with a strong smell of pine. Available both online from places like yankeedoodle.co.uk and Amazon and also offline from candle shops and garden centres. Prices vary for wax tarts but should be able to be picked up for around 95p which for me is an excellent price when you consider that you can get around 8 hours of fragrance from one little wax tart.
Nice but not for me sums this one up, 3/5 dooyoo stars as it does give the scent it claims to do and one that is strong and provides plenty of aroma.
Thanks for reading my review.
