Yankee Candle Mulled Wine Large jar
Last year a friend of mine from Australia came over to visit and as she used to live in the USA she stopped there on the way to do some shopping. Strange girl that she is ,she went to Yankee candles and bought, not small wax tarts like you or I might have done but this huge heavy glass jar of Mulled Wine candle. Needless to say when she was packing to go home this very weighty beast was one of the things that she had to leave behind and I was the lucky recipient. It weighs 22 oz just the net candle so with the jar this is a very heavy item and a lot more than you want in a suitcase with a 20kg allowance.I have had this now for about a year and burn it from time to time in the kitchen and still it has plenty left in it. Having said that for the price you pay for these I would expect it to give me some good for hours of scented burning.
Had I been buying this myself there is no way I would have bought this huge jar as I tend to go for the little tarts or votives although the small jars are sometimes on sale and tempt me. I have also been lucky enough to have been give a few small jars by my children at various times but if buying them myself the tarts are my usual choice as they are cheap and if you find you are not so keen then you haven't wasted a lot of money. This would have been a scent I would have gone for though as I love mulled wine and Christmassy sort of smells.
This jar is big and heavy and glass so I have had to be very careful to keep it out of the reach of the grandchildren even when it isn't lit as it would certainly break if dropped on our tiled floor. It is so heavy that because of its size I need two hands to hold it as my hand cannot fit around the jar with enough grip to be sure I won't drop it! It comes with a good glass stopper with plastic rims to stop the scent escaping when it isn't in use.
Yankee Candles the company originated in the USA. But have quickly become a household name over here in the UK.. They offer a huge range of home fragrance products from sprays, reed diffusers through to all kinds of shapes and sizes of scented candles. They are often found in garden centres and gift shops so it is a case of keeping your eyes open. We do actually have a Yankee Candle shop in the Westfield Centre in Derby but I rarely go in there as I find them very expensive so tend to see if I can get bargains elsewhere. It is also worth noting that www.yankeedoodle.co.uk often has them at discounted prices if you want to order a few. Clintons Cards also often have special prices in specific scents which change from time to time so it is a good idea to pop in regularly to check.
My candle jar was not wrapped at all and has a lovely big label on the front with the company name and the scent of the candle. The picture shows a silver bowl of mulled wine and several glasses of the mulled wine with cinnamon sticks in them. It looks most appetizing and very appealing. In order to use the candle you just open the lid and light the wick. I do find as the candle gets lower that I need to have a nice long match and a lighter is no use at all as it just burns my fingers as I tip it to get to the wick in the depths of the jar.
I do find that I have to regularly trim the wick because when it is too long the candle smokes and I got a nasty black mark on the wall and ceiling above where the candle was burning. It wiped off easily with some cleaning spray but was a bit annoying so I have been more diligent since. The other thing I have discovered it that when you blow out the candle you cannot put the lid on straight away as the smoke makes the glass go black and smutty which is not attractive. Even when I don't put the lid on after burning the glass sometimes gets black looking so I wait till the candle has cooled then use a damp cloth to clean it.
A little safety lecture now. All candles are mini fires that can easily spread. Even though this is ina big jar and the wax at the bottom doesn't get hot at all it is ALWAYS sensible to put candles on heat proof surfaces. Heat from candles can damage furniture as I discovered to my cost when I got scorch marks on a wooden table. I now put all my burners and any candles either on the tiled surfaces or on a couple of drink mats that are heat proof just in case. Another thing to be wary of is that you should NOT ever move a candle when lit as the melted wax is very hot and can cause nasty burns on skin or melted wax spilling can also cause wax stain damage or burns on carpets and other furnishings. Always put any burners out of the reach of children and never leave them in rooms unattended as candles can obviously cause fires. Someone I know put a tea light on their TV and left it, it melted the TV top and fell into the inside and set their room on fire so please be VERY careful they are to be treated as mini fires.
Having given all the dire warnings I am a big fan of candles and especially the scented ones as they give off lovely fragrances and also add atmosphere to a room with gentle flames flickering in their containers. They are a lovely addition to a room's ambience but just need to be treated with good sense.
I have been very pleased with the scent of this candle it is not as cinnamon scented as I thought it would be, it is quite subtle but does penetrate through the room. It has more of a warmed winter fruit compote sort of scent I would say. The fruit and spices are definitely a winter sort of scent but I don't mean that you have to burn it in winter it is just it reminds me of this sort of fruity spicy fruit salads made cinnamon, cloves and ginger. It also smells a bit like those orange pomanders that you put cloves in. I burn this in the kitchen and find it really suits this room and also gets rid of any not so nice cooking smells very quickly. It would also work well ina living room with a nice open fire and a glass or two or something warming.
The fact that this is a more mellow scent means that you could burn it while eating meal without it spoiling the flavor of the food although I do know several friends who hate candles burning when they are eating who might disagree.
Thank you to my good friend who buys far too much and then gives me half of what she buys and thanks to all the wonderful reviewers on these sites for introducing me to these gorgeous candles.
These large jars are one of many scented options that Yankee do and they also sell reed diffusers which I have tried several of and find them excellent. I wouldn't rush to buy another of these huge jars as they are expensive and I am always concerned that it is going to get dropped and broken. I do very much like the little tarts and have also enjoyed quite a few small jars but this is the only large jar I have had and I wouldn't recommend them really as they are far too big and start to look a bit tattty after a while, you have to keep cleaning the glass to keep them looking good.
On the whole these are average prices for Yankee options but they do vary quite a lot and it is worth keeping an eye open for special offers.

So thank you Yankee candles but this is a little too big for my personal use but I do love the subtle warming fruity spiced aroma so I will buy the scent again but not these huge expensive jars.
Five stars for the scent rather than the format.
Thanks for reading. This review may be posted on other sites under my same user name.
Summary: I love the scent of this but I wouldn't buy the large 22 oz jar again as it is far too big and heavy
