Advantages: cheap, functional, more simple design than many others available

Disadvantages: bowl not secured onto base, easily scorches

I love Yankee Candles, but they are very expensive and buying the jars can cost a lot of money. Although I do have a few of the jar candles, I have found the most cost effective way of trying lots of Yankee Candle scents, is to buy their wax tarts. The candles cost around £7 for the smallest size going up to around £22 for the largest. In comparison, the wax tarts - although they have a shorter burning time - only cost about £1 each.

Wax tarts are basically round wax discs, fragranced with the same high quality fragrances used in the candles - the main difference is that they don't have a wick. To use them, you need to put them into a 'tart burner' which will melt them and release their beautiful fragrances.

When trying to decide which tart burner to buy, I was overwhelmed by choice. There are the standard ones that melt the wax using the heat of a tea light, and others that are electrical. In terms of design, there is also a large choice, ranging from novelty ones that are more like ornaments, to more simple glass or ceramic creations. The problem I found when choosing one, was that my flat is quite modern, and a lot of them seemed to have quite a fussy appearance with flowers and patterns painted on them. The petal tart burner, with its curved black metal frame and cream flower shaped bowl seemed to be the most neutral one available, and it was also very reasonably priced compared to some of the others, so I decided to go for that one.

The design of this burner is very simple. It has a black metal frame, with a space to put a tea light on the base, and a cream ceramic bowl which sits on top. I do believe this particular design comes in a range of different colours too.

As the bowl is detachable, you will need to be careful not to knock it, as there is nothing to fix it on there, so there is a potential for accidents.

The tarts fit comfortably in the bowl, and the heat from the tea light candles seem to melt the wax quite quickly. The bowl is a little bit wider than the tarts themselves and I've found with all the tarts I have used, the scent filters around the room really well.

Once you have finished using the tart burner, you simply leave the wax to solidify and put the bowl in the freezer for 5-10 minutes. Doing this releases the tart, so you don't have to prise the wax out with a knife or anything like that. I have found with some of the tarts - the lemon lavender one in particular seems bad for this - that they leave a sort of coloured ring of wax on the inside of the bowl, which has to be sort of flaked off, if you know what I mean.

Another problem I have is scorching. Obviously the bottom of the bowl is quite scorched from having a candle flame heating it, but there are also a few scorch marks appearing on one side of the bowl, which looks a bit unsightly, but I have managed to minimize their appearance with a bit of stardrops cleaner!

I paid just £4.99 for this burner from Collectables, which I think is a very reasonable price.

If you're looking for a basic tart burner, then I would recommend this. It has a simple design compared to many others in the range which are a little fussy and flowery for my tastes. Although simple, it is functional and I would certainly recommend it.

Summary: A cheaper way to experience Yankee Candles

I love Yankee Candles - but I agree with you most of the burners are such ugly designs - glad you managed to find a decent one
