Yankee Candle Red Berry & Cedar
Advantages: Fresh and Light Fragrance Developing into Something Warmer, Great Winter Fragrance
Disadvantages: Sampler longevity is once again disappointing
===What is it?===
Another of the sampler candles included in my recent online order, Red Berry & Cedar is a seasonal, Winter themed release from Yankee Candle. As with all of the samplers (or votives) this shares the same attributes and is another short, wicked, fragrance-infused candle measuring a couple of inches in height and weighing 49 grams. A sampler candle is, as its name suggests, a way to get an introduction to the fragrances that Yankee produce without having to pay a lot of money on one of the larger glass-jarred Housewarmer candles. At around £1.60 each all of the sampler candles are inexpensive and many feature on sale at various times of the year both on-line and in-store at candle stockists and well known retail stores such as Clinton Cards and B&Q.
My Red Berry and Cedar Sampler was less than half price at just 70p from yankeedoodle and whilst the name and colouring of this one lends itself to the colder months of the year I buy scented candles for the fragrance they give off not for their name. A Sampler candle is designed to sit in a votive holder and once its wick is lit the wax begins to melt and the fragrance and essential oils that make up its composition are released into the air around the candle thus fragrancing its surrounding area.
A Sampler has a burning time of around 15 hours however it isn't the case that they release 15 hours worth of fragrance, generally I tend to get anywhere between a couple and upto 10 hours of scent from a single sampler with some being better than others. In my experience I have found that the stronger that the scent then the greater its longevity and as Yankee have a vast range of both subtle and strong fragrances in their collection it's often down to pot luck to how a Sampler performs.
Red Berry and Cedar has been one of the better performing Yankee Samplers I have used and although I did burn mine out of the Season it was released for it is one I would buy again as it would definitely suit the Winter months of the year.
===Red Berry and Cedar===
Bright red in colour complete with an illustrative sticker on its plastic wrapper the Red Berry and Cedar Sampler candle is one of the more obviously-named releases in Yankee's collection. Sometimes the names that are given are not representative of the scents on offer so you don't know what you're going to get until you start to burn the candle, (Beautiful Day for example, lovely name but no clues as to what it's going to smell of ) at least with this one you should pretty much have a good idea of what to expect and as usual I placed the votive into its holder, lit the wick and allowed the candle some time to begin producing its aroma.
My first impressions of Red Berry & Cedar were surprising, I imagined that this was going to be quite a deep scent with some sweeter elements, instead it started off bright and airy and put me in mind of a cold January day. It's quite a spicy candle, perhaps a little sharp in its top notes and nowhere near as sweet as I thought it was going to be, the Cedar inclusion is obviously apparent and like the smell of Pine it added a brightness to the overall aroma. Sometimes I describe Yankee's fragrances as being 'complex' or 'multi-layered' and Red Berry and Cedar fits this description nicely as once the initial brightness has had time to settle the heart of the fragrance is a lot warmer and does add a great deal of depth to the scent as a whole.
For something that starts off light and fresh it soon developed into a warm and spicy aroma which managed to catch my attention. There have been a lot of Sampler candles I have used in the past which have gently sat in the background and not been all that noticeable, this one however did make its presence known and whilst I wouldn't say it had the same intensity or pungency of a wax tart it still made for an obvious addition to my living room.
I do think its perhaps better suited to a kitchen or hallway rather than a living space for me at least as I prefer the scents with are either fruity or sweet and Red Berry and Cedar is a little 'fresher' than I would normally go for. Saying that though it is bright and airy to begin with and then develops into something a little richer so individual tastes will determine where it is best used. It is a Winter fragrance, there's no denying that and although maybe a little out of the Season at the moment it still ended up being a pleasant smelling scent which caught my interest. The only down-side with this particular format again came down to its longevity and over the course of a single day my sampler candle lost the majority of its fragrance and I probably got around 6 hours of aroma from it. For the price I paid though I can't grumble too much and whilst I would buy this one again I don't think I would want to pay full price for it as it hasn't been one of my favourites but it is recommended all the same.
It's not a five-star fragrance in my opinion, Red Berry and Cedar is _nice_ though and would suit a lot of people, It's not as sweet as I expected so didn't really suit my own tastes or my surrounding area although was definitely worth the 70p I paid for it. I would buy this again as a fragrance for my kitchen where I think it would be better suited and for a rating for this review it's getting a respectable 4 stars. The longevity of the Sampler is a little disappointing again but if you can find this particular votive on offer at less than a pound then it's money well spent, it's one to buy now and put away for the Winter I think and that's what I'll end up doing if I can find this one again.
Thanks for reading my review, please note that this also appears on ciao under my username.
