Yankee Candle Red Velvet Tart
Advantages: Sweet, Delicious aroma, New for Autumn 2012, Longevity of the wax tart,
Disadvantages: None for me but perhaps a little similar to other fragrances
Red Velvet is a new Autumn '12 fragrance from Yankee Candles and is currently available in all of the wax formats. As usual for me and my Yankee habit I tend to buy the wax tarts rather than the more expensive glass jarred candles as they're inexpensive at around £1.20 depending on where you buy them from and they give me the opportunity to experience a fragrance that is new to me without having to spend too much money.
Wax tarts generally have a life span of giving off an aroma for around 8 hours, this can vary though depending on the fragrance with some of the more subtle scents coming in under this whereas the stronger ones can often exceed that and last upwards of 10 or more hours. A wax tart is a solid piece of fragrance-infused wax which is designed to be melted on a tart burner by means of a lit tea light and can be an excellent introduction to Yankee Candles and the products and fragrances on offer.
Red Velvet is a current new release and when I first saw the selection available for the 3rd quarter of 2012 I was unimpressed as a lot of the fragrances seemed to be floral based rather than fruity or sweet ones. I often mention in my Yankee reviews that I tend to favour the sweet-smelling candles and wax tarts that Yankee produce and tend to steer clear of the florals as they don't really suit me or my own tastes. It was only on closer inspection of the wrapper that I realised that Red Velvet was in fact a sweet fragrance given the depiction of an indulgent-looking cake and deciding to take a chance on something new I bought one to try.
As shown in the supplied product image Red Velvet is dark, blood red in appearance and is described by Yankee as being "A most decadent creation of creamy frosting atop moist cake and a touch of brown sugar. So very sweet!" and as usual I would say that Yankee have pretty much got this one's description spot on. It takes around 10-15 minutes for the wax to start melting once it's in place on a tart burner and once it starts releasing its aroma it quickly builds in to being a room-filling freshly baked scent that is absolutely delicious.
Yankee produce a number of 'cake' and 'cookie' fragrances and I would say that Red Velvet is up amongst the best that they do. It's deliciously sweet with Sugary highlights that give the fragrance some depth and the brown sugar inclusion gives it an edge that reminded me of one of their old fragrances that they brought out in a limited edition (funnily enough, it was called "Brown Sugar" from the Spoonful of Sugar range). Unlike the old Brown Sugar fragrance that I found to be a bit flat and boring in Red Velvet it's supported by other layers of fragrance that makes it a lot more interesting, Vanilla is detectable which forms the basis of a lot of Yankee fragrances and there are definite Creamy elements that give the whole thing an all round richness and overall I'd say that Red Velvet is fast becoming another firm favourite of mine.
I got around 9 hours of fragrance from my single wax tart and had mine burning on an evening time for a few nights so would say that the £1.20 I spent on it made it exceptional value for money. This is one that will definitely appeal to those who like the sweet/baking fragrances that Yankee produce and as I'm already a fan of these types of fragrances this one definitely appealed to me. It is slightly reminiscent of Christmas Cookie and Cupcake but given how it's supposed to smell this is to be expected, unlike the festive-seasonally named ones that appear in the shops during the Winter months just in time for Christmas I'd say that Red Velvet has perhaps been marketed and produced to be available all year round and will become one that I buy on a regular basis.
Definitely recommended as far as I'm concerned and five stars as a rating.
Thanks for reading my review.
