I am a smoker and although I have tried to cut back on smoking in the car I am still doing it occasionally especially when I am stuck in it for long periods of time. This combined with the fact that I can be a bit slobby and don't clean my car as often as I should can mean that it isn't as fragrant as it could be. Because of this I always use an air freshener and at the minute I am really liking the Yankee Candle car air fresheners as I only discovered them a few months ago but I have tried a few now and they are far superior to most of the other car air fresheners that I have previously used not only in the variety of the fragrance on offer but also in the quality of the fragrance that they provide as they smell a lot fresher and more natural than most other brands available and are highly scented without being artificial and sickly smelling.
I bought the Sage and Citrus car jar online without having smelt it first which can sometimes be a big mistake as if you are going to be putting a fairly strong smelling freshener in your car then you should probably smell it first to make sure you actually like it but the description of the scent really appealed to me and I was sure that I was going to like it as I love the smell of sage and I thought combining it with citrus smells would work really well. Luckily when it arrived and I put it in my car I really liked it so much so that I have also bought one of the candles for my house.
The car jar comes shaped like a Yankee glass lidded candle so you can tell straight away from this who it is made by. There is some string in the top for you to attach the air freshener to your rear view mirror or wherever else you might like to place it. It is easy to attach to the rear view mirror and it stays in place without falling off and the string is strong enough that it won't snap with the slightest pressure.
This car jar is supposed to smell of sage with hints of lemon and talc. As soon as I opened the wrapper on this car jar I could smell it and the intensity of the air freshener only deepened when I hung it. It is a very potent smelling air freshener and it completely enveloped my car so much so that after only being in the car for an hour or so when I opened the door and got in it was the only thing that I could smell. It managed to mask completely the lingering smell of smoke to the point that even my friend who is a non-smoker thought I hadn't smoked in the car for weeks.
The scent of this one isn't really as strongly sage as I expected and the 'hint' of lemon is much more prominent than I thought it would be. This isn't a problem for me however as I love the smell of lemons and the hint of herbal sage that is combined with the lemon is a really nice mix. This is very fresh and clean smelling which is exactly the kind of smell that I was looking for to mask the smoke smell in my car and to just help freshen it up slightly without it smelling strongly of some artificial headache inducing scent.
As I mentioned this is a really strong smelling car freshener but at the same time even though it is strong and penetrates the whole car it isn't an overpowering scent so it doesn't smell cloying or completely overpower the senses. I like the fact that this is very natural smelling unlike so many other car air fresheners which smell artificial and can be a bit sickly. Sometimes with these other artificial air fresheners they can be overpowering for me especially when the heating is on in my car and they can cause me to feel a bit nauseous but I have never felt this way with this particular air freshener or any of the Yankee car jars for that matter because the fragrances are strong but natural and not too overpowering.
Sometimes lemon based home and car fragrances can smell like a kitchen or bathroom cleaner because the lemon smell is artificial but this is much more true to life smelling and is in fact really just a pleasant and clean smell. I really love the hint of sage and although I wish the sage had been a little bit stronger it might actually have been a little bit too overpowering had it been stronger and the combination of the sage and lemon is excellent and they work so well together and I can't understand why there aren't more candles, fragrances etc with this particular combination.
I have now tried a few different Yankee car air fresheners and I can't imagine that I would ever bother going back to using anything else as these are such a superior quality in comparison to most others. The fragrance of them is designed to last for up to 4 weeks and with most of them that I have tried they have actually exceeded this 4 weeks but not so with this one. This is the only disappointment with this particular car jar in that it only had the intensity for about 2 weeks and then abruptly faded so much so that by about 3 weeks there was only the slightest hint of fragrance still coming from it. It is a shame that it didn't last longer as it is such a nice fragrance but I did enjoy it for the 2 weeks that it lasted.
This only cost me £1.99 so even for the 2 weeks that it lasted strongly it is pretty good value for money and once you smell it you will immediately notice how superior it is compared to the other more synthetic car air fresheners on the market. I will definitely be buying it again once I have got through the other car jars that I have to use up first and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for an air freshener for their car that smells fresh and clean and helps mask any bad odors from smoking etc.
One thing you will always find in my cleaning cupboard under my sink is a selection of Yankee Candle Wax Tarts. I love my home to smell fresh and just basically nice, something I do worry about with two lovely Syrian Hamsters and a Kitten and I smoke...for my sins. I find Yankee to provide so many different scents that I never get bored of them and I like the price of the tarts and the 8 hour burn time plus I usually get from get from them and the natural fragrances that they are opposed to any other types of air freshening products that I use and ta boot...I get to burn them in pretty oil burners with a tealight candle under them which looks great!
This wax tart I came across recently in Homebase though Yankee can be found in a variety of places such as Clinton Cards and even Asda now, Yankee have their own website you can order from as well Yankeecandle.com and the place I often make a purchase of both the wax tarts and votives (small candles) is from Amazon.
The packaging of the wax tarts is very simple and it comes tightly and securely packed in a see through plastic wrapper and on the front of it we are clearly told what it is and who it is by and there is picture on there showing us citrus fruits and sage and then on the back label we are shown diagrams of how to use it, the size is stated which is 32g for all Yankee wax tarts, we are told we should get 8 hours burn time from this and contact details for Yankee are clearly stated.
The Wax Tart:
This wax tart is a thick lump of round wax and fluted to the edges and is a murky green in colour and to use it you pop it in the top of an ol burner with a tealight under it lit and it evaporates into liquid rather quickly. You can of course use a tart continuously or burn it for a time and then extinguish the tealight to which the wax hardens up for next time you want to use it and you can burn the whole thing on its own or snap it and use a smaller amount or even mix it with a piece of other tart....the choice is yours!
This releases a scent quickly and its alot nicer than I thought it would be this one. Its fresh and has a wonderful mix of lemons and limes to it which is refreshing with a hint of sage running over the top of it, grounded the somewhat zingy otherwise scent. Its quite potent and it fragrances my whole flat really well and even when I've stopped using it the fragrance of this lingers for a good hour or so which is a bonus.
This isn't a harsh scent but it is a clean one and I'm rather a fan of this one and will buy it again without hesitation. I find it relaxing but uplifting for my mood and feel this is best places in my kitchen/dining room to perk me up a bit and irradiate nasty whiffs!
Please be aware that this review is for the Sage & Citrus Gel Pack. Dooyoo only add 1 entry per Yankee fragrance to their catalogue
Despite buying, burning and melting my way through literally hundreds of candles and wax tarts during the 3 or so years that I've been a fan of Yankee Candles for I've never bought or tried anything specifically produced for fragrancing my car until a couple of months ago. I've noticed the car fragrancing gel packs and Magic-Tree-esque cardboard fresheners in a few stores and online for quite some time but as I'm rather lazy when it comes to keeping my car in pristine condition I usually only half-heartedly stick a Magic Tree freshener in there on the odd occasion when I remember to do so and normally replace them once it dawns on me that I have a useless dangling fragrance-free cardboard tree hanging from my rear view mirror.
I spotted a pack of Yankee Car Gels in my local Clinton cards store a couple of months ago and snapped them up as they were offered at half price at £3.12 instead of £6.25 for a pack of 3. I wouldn't normally dream of spending £6.00 plus on car air fresheners and had these not been on sale I wouldn't have bothered buying them at all but I'd just had my car valeted at the time and was proud of how it looked so wanted it to smell nice too. Sage & Citrus was the Yankee fragrance on offer and deciding that a little over a pound per freshener wasn't too bad a price to pay I parted with my cash, took the pack to my car and tentatively removed one of the Gel's out of the box, so what are they like and are they any good?
Sage & Citrus Car Gel
The Yankee Candle Odour Eliminating Car Gels are packaged in a cardboard box, they're designed to "eliminate odours and freshen the air in small spaces" according the blurb on the packaging and can be used for cars, wardrobes, bathrooms and kitchens. Each air freshener provides continuous fragrance for up to 4 weeks and are attached to an elastic piece of string which allows them to be hung or dangled from where ever you want to place them. I have mine in my car so the obvious place to put it was on my rear view mirror although I do have to point out that the string isn't particularly long and it was a bit of a struggle getting it to actually fit, I did think the string was going to snap as I tried to hang mine so my initial reaction wasn't all that positive to be honest but once the freshener in place it just dangles in the air and its fragrance is immediately noticeable.
The gel itself is sealed in a cellophane wrapper and is a jar-shaped piece of plastic which contains a small amount of green, gel material, you can't smell anything emanating from the pack itself but once it has been opened you are greeted by a strong aroma which is typically 'Yankee'. A sticker on the front of the freshener is the same as the ones found on other Yankee products and all in all these look well made and nicely detailed.
Sage & Citrus is predominately a Lemon fragrance, it's very light and airy but is strong at the same time. I smoke in my car so am aware that doesn't smell all that fresh so knew that any kind of air freshener would have to be work hard to eliminate the bad odours that smoking gives off so I was surprised to discover just how effective this actually is at getting rid of tobacco smells and day to day fustiness. The lemon cuts through the air in my car and travels well, it's a very 'clean' smell which is given some extra interest by the herby Sage inclusion and makes for a fresh, airy fragrance which is pleasant to the nose. Like the Magic-Tree cardboard air-fresheners the initial burst of fragrance is quite strong and almost overpowers but it quickly dies down and ends up being a fragrance that is unmistakeable but nice all the same. It's not too deep that it becomes cloying or heavy, you don't need to have your car windows wound down to get some fresh air into you car to clear the air and given that you are in close proximity to the freshener when you're driving it doesn't become too obvious or headache or sneeze inducing.
What I like best about this fragrance is that it is immediately noticeable when you open your car door, whilst I wouldn't say it restores it to smelling like brand new, straight from the showroom, pristine condition it does get rid of the strong tobacco odours and makes my car a pleasant place to get in to. Yankee have successfully taken a fragrance that would be nice in a home and transferred it to a car-friendly product that really works and it's a far better choice than those awful Magic Tree's in my opinion as the fragrance is a lot more authentic and isn't overpoweringly stinky. I like the freshness of Lemon anyway and think that it makes for a 'clean' aroma, the sage stops it from resembling a bathroom or kitchen cleaner and I think in this format it really works. I used my first car gel for a good 4 to 5 weeks before it lost all of its fragrance and have recently put the second one from my pack into my car and expect it to last for another month or so and whilst I do think that this is an expensive product for what it actually is I do think that it's probably worth the money for what you actually get.
I was lucky enough to get a '3 for 2' pack of Car Gels for my money so should potentially get 3 months worth of fresh, clean fragrance for my car, I'm not entirely sure that I would pay the £6.00 rrp once my pack has been used but if I find these again on offer I wouldn't hesitate in buying them again. I do think that if you're a smoker who has concerns about how fresh your car smells then this should definitely be a product to consider and even if you're sensible and don't smoke it's still a perfectly pleasant aroma to introduce to your car to keep it smelling fresh and clean.
Overall I've been impressed with this from Yankee and think that it makes for a worthy addition to their range of home fragrancing products, I can see how useful this would be for both the car and the home especially if used in smaller spaces and other than the price I have no concerns with these at all and would definitely recommend the Sage and Citrus Car Gel pack to other people.
I'm awarding four stars as my rating, the price of these lets them down slightly for me as I do think they're expensive but overall they have been a worthwhile buy.
Thanks for reading my review.
It is almost the end of the year and days like this when the winter sun is out reminds me often of summer and the season past. Not all of the leaves have come off the branches of trees yet and that, for me, is one good indication that we're not quite into Winter, even if the weather is reinforcing the feeling otherwise from the cold temperatures and in some places, early signs of Frost. From a back step of trying out a few Christmas candles, I like to remind myself that I have a few candles left over outwith the Christmas range of Yankee Candle and one of my discoveries late last year is the Sage and Citrus candle scent by Yankee Candle that I was given as a gift in the form of the small house warmer jar (a version I never touch as they are seldom powerful and worth the money at cost.), a car air freshener and a couple of the wax tarts.
Out of the fragrances I enjoy, it is mostly the spicy types rather than the flowery ones. That doesn't mean that I won't try ones out of the blue that are different from the norm. The Sage and Citrus scent is a lovely, heady and heart warming scent that has a dual job of being able to relax me as well as refreshen stale smelling rooms because of its triple layered scents of wax oils. Initially tried as a small jar candle and then the tarts, I was quite taken with the heavy scent that permeates rooms quite well before changing back to the more economical tart wax forms later on after the little jar finished. Being Yankee Candle by brand though, means there are so many varieties available matched by burning time, designs, sizing and prices. For example, there are country house warmer glass jars with heat insulated bases and airtight seals such as the "small," 3.7oz capacity 25 to 40 hours duration, "medium," 14.05oz capacity 60 to 75 hours and "large" 22oz 100 to 150 hours duration with respective costs of £7-99, £13-99 and £17-99 on average, air fresheners, plug ins (£6-99 to £8-99 6 to 9 weeks duration) votive candles (£1-75 on average), wax oil mix tarts (90p on average) and the "On The Go" travel spray pens at £5-99 to £8-99 on average. To get a good idea of what this fragrance offers, try the air freshener house warmer tabs as the Sage and Citrus is great at masking wet dog smells in the car!
Out of the cellophane wrapper (and there's a picture of Sage leaves with slices of lemon on the front) the wax tarts by YC never have fitted wicks, just a fluted edge all around mimicking a jam tart. You'll need a tea light candle fitted potpourri burner to get this wax melting into a hot oil before it can truly be experienced. In tart form, with 8 hours of supposed claimed duration, the good news is that this scent is very long lasting! So long lasting infact, the original tart when burnt for 2 hours daily has managed to outdo itself thrice over! This is exactly what happened when I first tried this scent in wax tart form. I vaguely remember questioning how long it would take for it to stop pervading its scent. For 3 weeks and counting, the original wax tart just seems to keep on going. On the one hand, the scent is long and lingering pervading a sweet and refreshing lemon scent without stinking out my home. On the other sometimes I get more Sage and sandalwood instead and that offers a bitter peppery experience. Put them together and there's certainly a bitter-sweet angle that seems to work quite well. No cream has been added here like vanilla to sweeten the idea but rather lemon in the form of realistic lemon and less synthetic than washing up liquid that is scented lemon! Yankee Candle has been rather savvy here to say the least! Proving the myth that not all candles are actually the same, Sage & Citrus has a long lasting effect. The top scent from Sage & Citrus is a glorious ambient warm Sage and hints of thyme without being minty and too prickly saved by the smell of lemons and limes as the middle notes that emerge. The candle could be so close to Citronella if it wasn't for the Sage as the hero. There are also a few hints of sandalwood from the base tones making this an ideal bathroom candle as well as one in the bedroom thanks to its heavy herby effect that doesn't induce coughing or sneezing because of the lemon. This is a good aspect because burning real Sage can be too strong in the home, often taking off a burnt grass smell which this candle doesn't suffer from and thanks in partly to the light lemons as its saviour. It is still quite a heady, in depth candle and should be avoided unless you love herbs in general.
When all is finished, toss the tea light candle out, wait for the burner and wax to cool and place in a fridge or freezer for a minimum of 15 minutes. Then take out, turn the burner over and the solid wax tart simply falls out - or should do with the slightest nudge of a blunt knife! Remember to smell the base of the wax tart though - if it still smells of scent, then it still has scent within it left.
One other aspect I love about Sage & Citrus is the old tale of keeping Sage in your home to warden off bad spirits. About the only bad spirit I have is when I take off my shoes but still, keeping fresh sage on display (or burning it) in your home wardens off any stale varieties like witches and goblins! On a more serious note, Sage & Citrus is a scent that combats tobacco smoke very well, mainly thanks to its sandalwood and sage tones rather than the lemon. The mild green colour of the actual candle may be a downside to some however. In jar form, it doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary fitting into many a kitchen décor rather than enticing enough to look anything special. It has strong potency however as a scented candle, more so with its triple scents on offer. In tart form, it is even more economical because the scent is long lasting even though you may have to purchase that Yankee Candle tart burner you've been promising yourself!
