Introduction
Despite buying, burning and melting my way through literally hundreds of candles and wax tarts during the 3 or so years that I've been a fan of Yankee Candles for I've never bought or tried anything specifically produced for fragrancing my car until a couple of months ago. I've noticed the car fragrancing gel packs and Magic-Tree-esque cardboard fresheners in a few stores and online for quite some time but as I'm rather lazy when it comes to keeping my car in pristine condition I usually only half-heartedly stick a Magic Tree freshener in there on the odd occasion when I remember to do so and normally replace them once it dawns on me that I have a useless dangling fragrance-free cardboard tree hanging from my rear view mirror.
I spotted a pack of Yankee Car Gels in my local Clinton cards store a couple of months ago and snapped them up as they were offered at half price at £3.12 instead of £6.25 for a pack of 3. I wouldn't normally dream of spending £6.00 plus on car air fresheners and had these not been on sale I wouldn't have bothered buying them at all but I'd just had my car valeted at the time and was proud of how it looked so wanted it to smell nice too. Sage & Citrus was the Yankee fragrance on offer and deciding that a little over a pound per freshener wasn't too bad a price to pay I parted with my cash, took the pack to my car and tentatively removed one of the Gel's out of the box, so what are they like and are they any good?
Sage & Citrus Car Gel
The Yankee Candle Odour Eliminating Car Gels are packaged in a cardboard box, they're designed to "eliminate odours and freshen the air in small spaces" according the blurb on the packaging and can be used for cars, wardrobes, bathrooms and kitchens. Each air freshener provides continuous fragrance for up to 4 weeks and are attached to an elastic piece of string which allows them to be hung or dangled from where ever you want to place them. I have mine in my car so the obvious place to put it was on my rear view mirror although I do have to point out that the string isn't particularly long and it was a bit of a struggle getting it to actually fit, I did think the string was going to snap as I tried to hang mine so my initial reaction wasn't all that positive to be honest but once the freshener in place it just dangles in the air and its fragrance is immediately noticeable.
The gel itself is sealed in a cellophane wrapper and is a jar-shaped piece of plastic which contains a small amount of green, gel material, you can't smell anything emanating from the pack itself but once it has been opened you are greeted by a strong aroma which is typically 'Yankee'. A sticker on the front of the freshener is the same as the ones found on other Yankee products and all in all these look well made and nicely detailed.
Sage & Citrus is predominately a Lemon fragrance, it's very light and airy but is strong at the same time. I smoke in my car so am aware that doesn't smell all that fresh so knew that any kind of air freshener would have to be work hard to eliminate the bad odours that smoking gives off so I was surprised to discover just how effective this actually is at getting rid of tobacco smells and day to day fustiness. The lemon cuts through the air in my car and travels well, it's a very 'clean' smell which is given some extra interest by the herby Sage inclusion and makes for a fresh, airy fragrance which is pleasant to the nose. Like the Magic-Tree cardboard air-fresheners the initial burst of fragrance is quite strong and almost overpowers but it quickly dies down and ends up being a fragrance that is unmistakeable but nice all the same. It's not too deep that it becomes cloying or heavy, you don't need to have your car windows wound down to get some fresh air into you car to clear the air and given that you are in close proximity to the freshener when you're driving it doesn't become too obvious or headache or sneeze inducing.
What I like best about this fragrance is that it is immediately noticeable when you open your car door, whilst I wouldn't say it restores it to smelling like brand new, straight from the showroom, pristine condition it does get rid of the strong tobacco odours and makes my car a pleasant place to get in to. Yankee have successfully taken a fragrance that would be nice in a home and transferred it to a car-friendly product that really works and it's a far better choice than those awful Magic Tree's in my opinion as the fragrance is a lot more authentic and isn't overpoweringly stinky. I like the freshness of Lemon anyway and think that it makes for a 'clean' aroma, the sage stops it from resembling a bathroom or kitchen cleaner and I think in this format it really works. I used my first car gel for a good 4 to 5 weeks before it lost all of its fragrance and have recently put the second one from my pack into my car and expect it to last for another month or so and whilst I do think that this is an expensive product for what it actually is I do think that it's probably worth the money for what you actually get.
Conclusion
I was lucky enough to get a '3 for 2' pack of Car Gels for my money so should potentially get 3 months worth of fresh, clean fragrance for my car, I'm not entirely sure that I would pay the £6.00 rrp once my pack has been used but if I find these again on offer I wouldn't hesitate in buying them again. I do think that if you're a smoker who has concerns about how fresh your car smells then this should definitely be a product to consider and even if you're sensible and don't smoke it's still a perfectly pleasant aroma to introduce to your car to keep it smelling fresh and clean.
Overall I've been impressed with this from Yankee and think that it makes for a worthy addition to their range of home fragrancing products, I can see how useful this would be for both the car and the home especially if used in smaller spaces and other than the price I have no concerns with these at all and would definitely recommend the Sage and Citrus Car Gel pack to other people.
I'm awarding four stars as my rating, the price of these lets them down slightly for me as I do think they're expensive but overall they have been a worthwhile buy.
Thanks for reading my review.
