Yankee Candle Siberian Silver Fir
Advantages: not overpowering or sickly
Disadvantages: nothing special about it, smells a bit like a cleaning product
When I first heard the name Siberian Silver Fir, I thought it was a breed of dog! Of course though its fir, not fur and the name refers to a species of tree and also my latest Yankee Candle wax tart. I bought this one online, knowing nothing about it really, but being tempted by the fact that it had been reduced in price.
When my little wax tart arrived, I was greeted by plain white wax decorated with a label featuring a snowy looking forest of, you've guessed it, Siberian silver fir trees. It all looked very wintery, but what I didn't realise at the time, was that this particular candle is actually from Yankee Candle's Christmas collection. Still, I personally don't think the scent is one that is only suitable for the Christmas period, although in all honesty it would probably have been more suited to the winter months, rather than August which is when I burned mine.
The scent of the candle in the wrapper seemed pleasant - it smelled a bit like pine mixed with perfume. Probably not the best description, but like I say, I felt it smelled pleasant. When I actually unwrapped it and had a proper sniff, I wasn't quite so sure. Again, I could still smell a pine scent, but it had a lemony/citrus edge to it. Normally I like anything lemon scented, but mixed with pine it seemed very much like a cleaning product. My fiancé actually described it as smelling like one of those little freshener block things that they put in urinals!
I should, for those not familiar, describe the concept of a wax tart. Rather than being a candle as such, a wax tart is a disc of fragranced wax. It doesn't have a wick though, and should be melted in a special 'tart burner' (a bit like an oil burner) which can also be purchased from Yankee Candle.
When I lit the tea light in my burner, I remember wondering if the scent of this candle would be too strong, as it certainly seemed quite potent when unwrapped. After around 15 minutes or so however, when the tart had fully melted, only then could I smell it and it was actually quite subtle.
The fragrance which filled the room was a delicate pine-citrus combo, not dissimilar from how it had smelled when it was solid. The wax tart managed to fill my sitting room with scent, however I noticed that it didn't seem to travel to neighbouring rooms. I actually thought the scent was OK, but my fiancé was not so keen. I will admit that there is nothing 'Wow' about the scent and there is certainly that air of cleaning product about it.
Each tart is supposed to supply approximately eight hours of fragrance and although I did not count, I think in this case that estimate was about right.
I bought this online from www.yankeedoodle.co.uk. If you're shopping on the high street, Collectables and Clinton Cards also sell these. Of course if you don't fancy a wax tart, then other formats are available. See below for approx burn times and prices:
Wax Tarts - Burn time 8 hours - £1.10
Votives - Burn time up to 15 hours - £1.60
Small Jar - Burn time 25-40 hours - £7.45
Medium Jar - Burn time 65-60 hours - £15.45
Large Jar - Burn time 110-150 hours - £18.45
I think on the whole I was left feeling quite disappointed by the Siberian Silver Fir fragrance. It was just too generic and nothing special at all. I would not buy this again, and I don't think I could recommend it as there are so many other Yankee scents available which are actually nice, so it's a thumbs down from me!
