Advantages: Great fragrance which lasts and lasts.
Disadvantages: It won't remind you of Soft Blankets!
Standing in my local branch of 'Collectables' a couple of weeks ago smelling the various Yankee candles on display, I decided to treat myself to a couple of wax tarts. The thing is I am very indecisive and as there are so many to choose from, it wasn't an easy task.
I choose to buy the wax tarts as I believe these represent the best value for money in terms of fragrance and longevity. The slightly higher priced votives are also something I have bought too, but the wax tarts are my first choice. By buying either of these however, you are getting an introduction to that particular scented candle and therefore these are an ideal way to sample the different scented Yankee candles before splashing out on the more expensive glass jar candles.
As I stood deliberating over which ones to purchase, I picked up this 'Soft Blanket' wax tart. Pure white in colour and with a photograph of a teddy bear tucked up in a white blanket stuck on the shrink-wrapping, I expected this to be akin to the clean cotton or baby powder fragrances in the range.
So I was really surprised to discover that 'Soft Blanket' had a strong fragrance which definitely did not put me in mind of blankets, linen, cotton, baby powder or teddy bears!
Instead it was a strong and woody almost spicy fragrance I was smelling from this wax tart, which seemed very familiar to me and after a few seconds I remembered exactly what this wax tart's fragrance reminded me of... it was Joop aftershave!
Whilst not exactly the same as Joop aftershave, it definitely reminded me of some of the notes contained in the Joop fragrance and as I actually love the smell of Joop, it was no surprise then that I purchased this wax tart.
I also noticed when I came to write this review that another reviewer has also commented that 'Soft Blanket' also reminds them of Joop, so I am not alone!
After unwrapping the wax tart and placing it in my oil burner I lit a tealight and placed it underneath. You must ensure the well in your oil burner is deep enough to hold the wax tart, as some of the oil burners with a shallow well would not be deep enough to contain the melted wax, unless you cut the wax tart in half.
I usually find that after around 4-5 mins as the wax begins to melt, I begin to detect the fragrance from a wax tart, however, with this one I began to smell the fragrance after only 2-3 minutes.
The fragrance became stronger as the wax melted and soon the whole room was filled with the scent, wafting out into my hallway and up the stairs. My daughter was in her bedroom and could smell it there too!
Yankee describe the Soft Blanket scent as "Wrapped in sweet dreams ... a lullaby of clean citrus, luxurious vanilla and warm amber."
Now whilst I can definitely detect notes of vanilla and amber here, I would personally not describe it as having a citrus fragrance and instead I would say it is woody and spicy.
Yankee also state you can expect up to 8 hours burn time from a wax tart before the fragrance disappears, which is something I think varies from candle to candle. The longevity of some wax tarts I have used are really good and I have actually experienced over 8 hours of fragrance with some of them. However, there are also one or two disappointing wax tarts I have sampled. Indeed the last one I purchased only gave me around 3 hours of fragrance before it disappeared and although the fragrance was nice while it lasted, it was overall a bit of a let-down.
Thankfully Soft Blanket really excels in its longevity and after 12 hours burning I could still detect the fragrance quite strongly. It was actually only after around 14 hours that I began to notice the fragrance weakening and therefore this wax tart lasted me around five days as I burned it for approximately 3 hours a day.
What also impressed me about Soft Blanket was that I could smell the fragrance hanging in the air all over my house for a long time after extinguishing the tealight. I went to bed one evening and could still smell it the next morning. I then went out to work and on returning home at tea-time, I opened the front door and could smell the fragrance right away!
I can definitely recommend Soft Blanket in terms of fragrance and longevity, however I can't help but feel its 'Soft Blanket' name is a bit odd as this fragrance does conjure up any images of blankets or teddy bears etc.
It is definitely my favourite Yankee candle to date and I will be purchasing it again. If you like Joop, you will like this!
Soft Blanket wax tart is currently available from around 99p online. I purchased mine from Collectables priced at £1.15. Yankee Candles are also stocked in branches of Clinton Cards and other card and gift shops.
