Yankee Candle Sparkling Lemon
Advantages: Lovely lemon and lime smell great for getting rid of odours scent lingers well
Disadvantages: none for me
I have been a huge fan of Yankee Candles for several years now ever since we used some of them to fragrance and light up the room at our wedding. After reading so many reviews on wax tarts by Yankee Candles I have been converted to using them. This review on the Sparkling Lemon fragrance relates to my use of a wax tart version of this fragrance.
In case you're unaware Yankee Candles in a USA based company that has been making candles since 1969 when the company founder Mike Kittredge melted some crayons to make a candle for his mum and sold one to a neighbour. Over 40 years later they are one of the most-recognized names in the candle business with over 150 fragrances scents. The majority of these are manufactured by master chandlers (candle makers) in Massachusetts USA.
What is a tart?
If you don't know what Yankee Candle wax tarts are the easiest way I can describe them is they are in miniature form the same shape as a traditional edible tarts with a fluted edge. The tart is made of the same wax used in the all the Yankee Candle candles minus a wick. This tart measures approximately 6cm in diameter and 2cm in height and is a lovely soft lemon color as the picture on Dooyoo illustrates. The tart is wrapped in plastic to protect it from crumbling and has a picture of a glass of clear liquid with ice cubes and lemon on the front of it. When the tart is placed on top of a tart burner or oil burner then the tart is melted by a tea light underneath and it gradually starts to give off a gentle aroma. When you want to remove the wax from a tart burner it is recommend you place the tray section of the tart burner in the freezer for a few minutes and then gently easy this out. I can definitely vouch that this has always worked for me not only with this fragrance but with others too. Yankee candles claim that the scents from wax tarts last about 8 hours. What I actually do is generally half each tart to get more use out of them and I find there is still enough scent from a tart to fragrance a room this way.
"Effervescent sweet Meyer Lemon with notes of energetic citrus lime and bergamot orange" is the way Yankee candle market this fragrance. When using the tart what I have found is that the initial top notes of this tart are a bubbly light lemon fragrance that as the wax melts seems to revitalize the room. This is not an artificial lemon smell as often found in cleaning product but more of a zesty lemon that reminds me of squeezing and zesting lemons for a drizzle cake. As the scents start to settle down after about 15 minutes a hint of freshly squeezed limes becomes noticeable and backs up the citrus notes of the lemon. The final base notes of bergamot orange are quite subtle and I don't always pick these up. After half an hour when all the wax has turned into a deliciously hot yellowy colored oil, the fragrance that I think this is most reminiscent of is the lemons in a lemon meringue pie and by this a good home made lemon pie that is bursting with zest and juice and the sweet sugary smells of hot warm meringue with an edge of brunt sugar as the top caramelizes slightly. I find the scent from this fragrance does last well and I have found that I do get around the 8 hours worth of scent claimed for this fragrance. One of the things that I like about this scent especially at the moment is how summery it makes me feel. The zesty sparkling scent seems to bring a touch of the warmth of the Mediterranean to a room on a night time. Whilst I generally burn this on an evening once my son has gone to bed I don't think this scent is a heavy one and would be suitable for day time burning too. The fragrance is a lovely clean scent and I actually find t seems to neutralize odours well and I will light this fragrance say if we have had some strong smelling food that night such as a curry and this takes away those smells.
I would definitely recommend this as a summery fragrance for the home. The zest smell of lemon is complemented well by the citrus tones of lime and bergamot. The scent last well and one that hits you with full on lemon and sugar every time you re enter a room when it has been burning. The scent from the wax tart I find lasts well and lives up to the 8 hours worth of claims by the company and if you do as I do and brake tarts in two that is 16 hours of lovely fragrance for just over a £1 for which you really can't go wrong. I tend to buy mine either on line or at a local garden centre which stores a large range of Yankee Candle products.
The scent is available in other formats as well as tarts and the following is a list of some of that selection from www.yankee.co.uk
