- Why I Bought -
I have recently got into Yankee Candles after reading many interesting reviews about the different scents available. I don't wish to spend a lot of money on the larger jar candles as I enjoy chopping and changing between the different smells. Therefore I find the wax tarts and samplers (votives) to be the perfect size and price for me. I kept reading that it isn't advised to burn a sampler candle without a holder of some sort as it causes the candle to lose its shape and burn unevenly. I decided to look online to see what Yankee Candle sampler holders were available and was quite disappointed by the selection. I found the majority to be tacky, old fashioned, too bright or overly patterned. I had almost given up when I came across the Vintage Blue holder which I thought looked quite cute and twee. I decided to order one as it was a good price so I felt I didn't have much to lose if it wasn't right.
- The Holder -
When my sampler holder arrived it was slightly larger than I was expecting. The sampler size candles are quite small and I thought they would sit snug inside the holder but it is a bit roomier than I had anticipated. This wasn't a problem though. It is approximately 7cm in height. The holder is made from cream china and is decorated with pretty little blue flowers. The blue is a medium shade and I would have preferred navy but it is still nice. The base of the holder is narrower than the top, with a diameter of 5cm compared to 8cm. There is a small band of textured cream flowers which is a pretty detail. In the photo it appears as if this band is completely cream but in reality it looks more like a grey background with cream flowers over it. I think this is a shame as it looks better in the picture. The top of the holder is wavy which looks nice. The candle then sits inside but as I have said it isn't a snug fit. Overall I think the holder looks nice. It has an old fashioned vintage feel to it without it being out dated. Floral designs are very fashionable at the moment so the pretty blue flowers tie in nicely with this trend. I don't think the quality is exceptional but it is adequate. It feels strong and durable but the finish is a little basic.
- In Use -
It is easy enough to light a new sampler candle when it is in this holder. Equally it is easy to light the candle and then place it inside the holder. This is the advantage of the roomy fit. The wax did not leak out from the holder so from this point of view it is a good container for burning a sampler candle. Due to the wide fit the candle did not keeps its shape exactly. Instead the candle melted to fit the sloping sides of the holder. However, it kept its shape much better than when I had burnt a candle with no container at all. It seemed to burn quite evenly and I think having a holder does increase the burn time of the candle. What remained of the candle was easily removed by placing the holder in the freezer for half an hour then simply peeling the wax away. This is much better than risking damaging the holder by chipping of wax with a knife. I would say that the holder works effectively and I will continue to use it when burning my sampler candles. In fact I think it would look nice as a set so I have ordered another holder exactly the same to go with it.
- Price and Availability -
The standard price for this holder is £6.45. It is available from Yankee.co.uk, Yankee Direct and Amazon at a discounted price of £4.83 plus postage. I paid this price on Amazon and I think it is reasonable. You can also find them on Ebay. There are other items in the same range such as jar shades in small and large, trays in small and large, and a tart burner.
- Would I Recommend? -
If you like the look of this and you need a holder for your sampler size candles then I would definitely recommend the vintage blue holder. It is pretty and has a cute vintage style, it works well as a holder for burning sampler candles in and the price is reasonable. I don't think the finish is of a great quality but I think it is fine for the price.
