Madge OC 3610 ... connected to each CAU, and up to 20 lobes can be connected to each LAM. With the STP repeaters included in each CAU, the maximum cable length between CAUs can be up to 400 meters (1320 ft). If a longer cable length or fiber cable is needed, the STP ring-in/ring-out modules can be replaced by an optional fiber module, allowing a fiber cable length of up to 2000 meters (6600 ft). A total of four ring-in/ring-out module options are available: STP modules (included with each CAU), UTP modules, ST fiber modules & mini-BNC fiber modules. For maximum flexibility, the CAU allows mixing of CAU interconnection cables, so one CAU can, for example, be attached to both UTP cable and fiber cable, via the ring-in/ring-out modules.

The Olicom CAU is interoperable with Olicom's Multistation Access Units (MAUs) and with CAUs, LAMs and MAUs from IBM. The Olicom LAMs are IBM plug-compatible, and the Olicom fiber module in the Olicom CAU can communicate with an IBM fiber module in an IBM CAU. It is also possible to connect up to two standard MAUs on each of the four LAM data ports on the CAU's back-panel, using a standard STP lobe cable between the CAUs LAM port and the MAU's ring-in connector. A UTP/STP impedance converter plug is needed if the MAU in question is a UTP MAU. If two MAUs are to be connected to one LAM port, the two MAUs are interconnected with a normal STP (or UTP) patch cable from ring-out to ring-in.
