Speed, it would seem, is everything. As our needs for quick connectivity grows ever stronger, manufacturers continually limit us with 2 or 3 ports on our computers, laptops etc. This is a great "connect everything on your desk" product. I bought one for work, and have connected to it a super fast backup drive, HD Webcam, Printer. When I come in in the morning, I just connect to the hub with one cable and I am ready to go.
The great thing about USB 3.0 is the capacity of the protocol. With USB 2.0, often if you connected 3 or 4 items to a hub, particularly when copying large files etc, the system would really start to slow down. I don't pretend to understand the technology behind this, but USB 2.0 was limited to 480mb/s - bear in mind that is a theoretical maximum, rather than the speed you get day to day. So copying chunky files (Gigabytes of files) would often really slow up proceedings. USB 3.0 boosts this to a whopping 5 Gb/s, meaning there is over 10 tens more bandwidth for data to flow between the devices and your computer. File transfers are noticeably quicker, and in general my use of various peripherals seems much more responsive and less lag time. As demands grow over time, I think USB 3.0 will become more and more the standard in even basic computers.
In terms of this device, the Trendnet Hub is a good simple Hub that delivers excellent value. There are arguably hubs which are better designed, perhaps more elegant, but I for one have always valued performance over style, and I can't fault the performance of this excellent device. Trendnet have created a niche of functional, great value electronics products, and this follows that trend excellently. Is it the prettiest item I have ever bought ? No. then again, neither is the spaghetti of cabling and peripherals which emerge from it ! None the less, what stands out here is how solid it is. I have previously had USB hubs "crash" - i.e. lose connection to the devices. This can be really frustrating if you are in the middle of a big file transfer. My work involves editing and encoding videos, so reliability is really of the utmost importance to me day to day. Restarting a file transfer or encode can cost me minutes if not hours. This Trendnet hub has run all day every day on my desk and not suffered a single hitch. If anything, I sometimes feel the need to go into the folders of external drives and check the file transfer has completed successfully, it seems such a smooth process by comparison.
Finally, the great thing about USB 3.0 is that it is backwards compatible, in other words, it will happily run your USB 1.0 and USB 2.0 devices, even connecting to a USB 2.0 port if you are yet to upgrade you computer, this hub lets you upgrade step by step, which is a great cost saver too.
