Advantages: Incredibly cheap, fast, and small

Disadvantages: N/A

Being in the design business, my desk has a lot of peripherals sat on it - a printer, flatbed scanner, film scanner, graphics tablet... you name it, I've got it. Unfortunately each one of these devices connects to my computer via USB, which means that during any given project I have to do a lot of cable changing. To make things worse, my current keyboard and mouse are also both USB powered, which doesn't help the problem. I realised that in order to maintain my sanity, I would need a USB hub - a device which basically works as an extra input for more USB devices.

My criteria was specific, and the product had to be;

A) Fairly small (so not to take up any more premium desk space).
B) Self powered, rather than mains powered (as plugs are at a premium in the office)
C) Cheap

Oh, and D) It has to work with a Mac as well as PC.

Step forth the (not so) imaginatively titled 'TRUST HU-3340M 4PMINI USB2 HUB' which you can purchase for an incredible £2.01 from Amazon. Actually, when I purchased the hub over a year ago I think I paid around £4.99 from Staples.

The pretty looking silver device is made of metal and is very small - only 0.9 centimeters thick and 4.4 x 4.4 centimeters in length and width. It is powered by a USB cable (included), and will provide you with four extra empty ports. So, already the device has already fulfilled my criteria - but how does it perform as a hub?

The product has a data transfer rate of 480 Mbps - quick enough for speedy data transferal, and fast enough to keep my devices running smoothly. When plugged in to the computer, you know the hub is working as an orange LED indicator lights up, and will remain on until you disconnect it from the computer.

All the peripherals that I have plugged into the hub have operated efficiently and without any trouble - therefore, due to a combination of its price, looks and quality, I would highly recommend the HU-3340M - and yes, it's both Mac and PC compatible.

Summary: Great USB Hub
