Netgear FS605 ... ve known Netgear s stuff through work, and needed a little switch for home as I have currently have three PCs connected and sharing an internet connection. For those who are unaware of what a network switch does, it allows multiple computers to talk to one-another via their network cards. As most PCs now come with at least one network port as standard, then having more than PC in a household becomes an interesting prospect. This is the smallest 5 port switch I have ever seen, not much wider than the 5 network ports at it s rear. The unit comes with a power supply, but no network cables, these will need to be purchased seperately. Each port has a single status indicat... D-Link DES-1008D ... switch looks great. It has those cooling (?) slits at the side, the brand in big letters embossed on top; a professionally-looking blue sticker on top as well. Until I bought it and had it in my hands. A featherweight; no metal, but beautified plastic. The four rubber pieces to make it stand on a surface came separate and need to be sticked into the bottom, from where they regularly fall off when I lift the box. The thingy is so lightweight, that it regularly falls over when one of the network cables move. A cheap, non-switching power-supply produces more heat than the whole box. SMC TigerSwitch ATM ... switch is a great deal. It has 2 ATM 125MBS optic ports, and a ton of RJ45 Ethernet ports for ATM only. They do NOT allow most ethernet cards. You will need ATM ethernet cards. A ton of bandwidth can be handled. Since I am a movie producer, I rely heavily on speed. And this definately handles huge file transfers. I also use the switch for a Raid Fibre Channel array which works flawlessly. This switch is much reccommended if you are just entering the world of atm. Other than that A cisco would be better, but since cisco s cost so much, SMC has great counter products to cisco. A much reccommened product. A++ in my book.
