Not great for low fat ice cream
Member Name: jade22green
Advantages: easy to use, reasonably priced
Disadvantages: didn't make low fat ice cream
I had been looking for an ice cream maker for a while when this one came on special offer at MAKRO for £16.99 plus VAT, so it ended up costing just under £20, which is very reasonable for an ice cream maker and I have found that Kenwood is brand to be trusted.
I have a lot of Kenwood products, my favourate Kenwood product is my food processor, I love it and wouldn't want to be without it. So when I saw they had an icecream maker I thought it would be a good buy.
I'm sorry to disagree with the other reviewers but I have found this ice cream maker very difficult to get on with. My ice cream never seems to come out looking like ice cream when I use this.
Now what I will say is that I always try to make the low fat ice creams, so maybe that has got something to do with it.
The whole reason I wanted an ice cream maker is because I do Weightwatchers and learnt that ice cream can be made using skimmed milk, which makes it much lower in fat and better for you. You can make it without an ice cream maker, but you have to keep going back to the freezer top stir or whisk it, which is a bit of a pain.
There is a recipe with this product that makes low fat vanilla ice cream, but whenever I try it, it just doesn't work and is either too sloppy and thin or is more like a sorbet. I have tried about 6 times, but it always comes out the same. I haven't yet tried a full fat ice cream and don;t really want to because that is quite cheap to buy and I wouldn't really bother to make my own anyway.
The product is quite easy to use although you do need to be prepared. The bowl has to go into the freezer for a minimum of 24 hours before you want to make your ice cream so that the bowl is frozen solid and freezes the ice cream mixture. You just follow your recipe frorm the booklet and then place the mixture into the bowl. Then all you have to do it put the lid on and start it up. The paddle turns and churns the ice cream, the length of time it takes depends on your recipe. When it's ready you can either eat it straight away or you can put it in the freezer for later.
On the basis of making low fat ice cream I would not recommend this product at all. My rating of 2 out of 5 stars is because although it didn't work with the low fat, it still did taste nice and was edible, just not like ice cream.
Summary: might be ok for some ice creams, but not for low fat
