This piece of kit is almost fool-proof, making really nice ice cream every time. There's even a recipe in the booklet where you don't even need to go through the custard stage - you more or less just chuck in the egg yolks, sugar, milk and cream (plus whatever) and it comes out great.
There are two down-sides: one is the price, but I think it's worth it, and the other is that it's really quite noisy - you don't want it on in the same room as you are you, so make the ice cream BEFORE if you're going to eat in the same room. Anyway, it's better to put the ice cream in the freezer once it's made, for half an hour or so, especially in the summer, otherwise it might be a little soft (that's probably the same for all makers). The noise also makes it stressful to cook in the same room (at least for me) so yes, it's better to plan ahead!
But really, I do recommend it - the ice cream is really good, and my machine has been used countless times and it's still going strong.
