Osram Dulux S/E 11W/827 2G7
by topsyturvy
Osram are a well known brand of light bulb and I have been buying them for a few years now as their energy saver's prove to have 10 years of life. They do quite a lot of different bulbs, I found this in Poundstretcher and was impressed, a good brand like this and it was a great price also. I use these bulbs mainly for my living room ... light as this is where I use my energy saver bulb, this is a 60w bulb which is fine for me and this particular light comes in two shades, I went for 827 which is warm white. The brand are well known and it looked like a good enough bulb to me, so I was happy to go ahead and buy it and see how good it was.
PACKAGING
This Osram light bulb comes in a tall rectangular bright green box with an orange band which has the logo on it. There is a picture on it of the bulb and colour and it boldly claims to last 10 years which is a strong promise. It is an Osram Duluxstar and is 10,000h which is the equivalent of 10 x 1000h and inside of the box it is tightly packed with a cardboard frame so that it does not break. There is a leaflet inside the box and it is very light to hold this, it all looks great and the details on the box are all clear to make sure that you are picking this right bulb for what you need it for, there are a few images of how not to fit this bulb.
OSRAM 11W/827 ENERGY SAVER BULB
Upon looking further into this bulb on the Osram official website, this exact bulb is ideal to use on general illumination, domestic applications, wherever compact and efficient lamps are needed. These can also be used in outdoor use in enclosed and ventilated areas, this bulb is also up to 80% less energy consumption than ordinary light bulbs. So, it has a lot going for it and it is a bayonette cap but looking around some have different fastenings on them, it just depends which is right for you. The bayonette works for me just fine as this is what I needed and I was only using it to replace my old living room light and found it easy to install.
With this, you just click it into place and it should hold securely in place, once there just turn on the lights again and that should be you. They say not to hold the bulb but just to hold the metal area to not burn yourself. Also, do not dispose of the light bulb in a wheelie bin it says, there are not too many precautions to take to install this. This light being 60w is really bright when it is on, it shines and lightens up the room, it doesn't make a noise at all when it is on and it takes about a few minutes or so until it reaches the full brightness. I think this is fine though as I know they are energy efficient and the brightness is adequate enough to lighten the room.
They say they last 10 years but after reading this, I cannot agree, if you get a good 2-3 years out of them like I usually do, it is still alright. I hardly put the light on that much but maybe switching on and off drains them quicker. I put it on for a good hour a day maximum and getting a couple of years considering the price I paid, it is ok. The quality has been really good on this light bulb and I do feel it keeps costs down being energy efficient, I don't have to buy a replacement bulb as often with these which is why I like to use them. I have since bought a number of different bulbs from Osram and have never been let down by them being faulty.
These are great to have in and if you use energy saving bulbs like this, then they are great, so easy to install and nice and bright. I am pleased with this brand and this exact model and don't really have a bad word to say. They are good in any household and the fact you can choose from two colours is useful at the same time as well as the energy efficient side of them. The vaults used on this bulb are 220 - 240V and it is a LUMILUX bulb, when these are finished with they don't go on anymore at all they go black and I normally just throw them out in a recycling point. They are reliable and a reasonable price range too, they cover a lot of bulb types.
COST
These can be bought online and in a lot of places like supermarkets, Homebase etc and I got my one in Poundstretcher where I paid just £1 which is a bargain for this.

Philips Master ES 93036 30W 36G
by northernlovely
When my husband and I had to relocate for work, we rented a modern apartment. The landlady / letting agent was responsible for the upkeep of the plumbing, electrical appliances and so on but the one thing we did have to purchase was halogen bulbs, and boy did it have a lot of them (about 30 - the 2 bathrooms, lounge, kitchen and hall had ... nothing else!).
Unfortunately for us, the bulbs in question were Philips Master ES 93036 30W 36G halogen bulbs. 30w is quite a low wattage for a light but the sheer amount of them and the low ceilings account for that. I say unfortunately because they seemed to pop quite often, far more often than their lifespan, and they cost in our local DIY shop £5.50 a bulb! The price seems to vary between £4.50 and £6 per bulb depending where you shop - do you remember when a standard 'old fashioned' bulb was around 50p!?
According to Philips the life span of the bulb is approx 5000 hours which on average use is about 2 years, I'd say. We had to replace them far far more often than that - in the 6 months we were in the flat we must have spent £60 on bulbs - and yes, the electrics were brand new and checked etc.
Anyway, I can't really moan too much about installation they're easy to install, and they give a good clear light. But the problem is entirely that they're either too fragile or that they just don't last as long as the packet says they do. At £5.50 a bulb, it's just insane. I was so glad to move into a 'normal' house where I could at least use regular energy saving bulbs which last far far longer.
Overall I'll give the Philips Master ES 93036 30W 36G 3 / 5, they are easy to use and they give a good light but they just don't last as long as I feel they should, and they're pretty expensive given you very very rarely use one, you generally need at least three or four (and spares).

Osram G24Q 3 Dulux D/E 26W/840
by Coffeetiere
About three years ago we bought a brand new flat. One thing with having a new build property is it is apparently super energy efficient and uses all the latest mod-con light bulbs. This was an education in light bulbs to say the least and caused some problems finding replacements.
Most of the flat has spot lights, of various ... sorts, however the lounge had hanging energy efficient bulbs. The problem was that these energy efficient bulbs were so long that we could not get a light fitting to cover them! We the fore set about trying to find a shorter version of the same bulb, which was easier said than done. Eventually online I came across this Osram bulbs, which are a good inch shorter than the ones which came originally with the flat and fit inside light fittings.
Previously I had never encountered this type of energy efficient light bulb. It has the strangest fitting, a plastic square in the middle of the fitting with two pins on either side. It's called a G24q-3 fitting. The bulb itself is about 17cm long, so a long bulb, even if it is shorter than the original ones and is made up of two glass pipe elements, it's actually rather funny looking.
Looking online now these bulbs seem to quite ready available, which is good for use in the future! And, one bulb costs around £3, which I am sure is much less than we paid. It does say these bulbs last around 20,000 hours and after just over three years we still haven't had to replace any. These are very efficient bulbs.
They are 26 watts, which seems little compared to the old fashioned light bulbs which generally came in 60 watt, however they are very Brit and give out a nice, clean light. They do take a while, 30-60 seconds to get to full beam though.
Most people won't be able to buy this sort of bulb as this fitting is only in new build properties, that is unless you change your fittings at home. For anyone with a new home I would recommend these as they are long life, and at about £3 a bulb super good value. Read the complete review |
