Advantages: the price

Disadvantages: can be addictive, not quite the quality of Photoshop

I have been using this programme for several years now, and although it isn't Photoshop, its is great fun. You can do so many things with the programme, and there are so many forums, groups and tutorials to help, even the beginner can't go wrong with it. For anyone who enjoys playing with graphics this is the ideal programme, and it could well be used as a stepping stone to better, more expensive programmes.

If you're serious about digital painting you'll probably need a graphics tablet to use with it, but everything can be done with a mouse, so it's not vital, it just makes detailed work much easier.

You can manipulate photos with the programme, and there's a special tool to get rid of that annoying red eye you get on photos when you use a flash.

For art there are different styles you can use, so you can do digital paintings that look like oil paintings or pastels as well as the standard painting.

The drawback is that you can get addicted, so make sure you've plenty of space on your hard disc for all the picture 'tubes' (pictures without a background that you can use as elements in graphics)that you will collect, as well as fonts, effects, frames, and so on!
