Café Fun without the Expense
Most people these days seem to be on Facebook and after much persuading, I am one of them. Although it took me ages to visit Facebook and see what all the fuss was about, I have to admit that I am now addicted. Not only can you meet up with old friends and find out what everyone is doing these days, but you can also wile away the hours of your spare time on the many applications offered on this site. Many applications are pretty pointless, though there are a few games which are actually quite addictive, and Café World is one of these.
WELCOME TO CAFÉ WORLD
Café World is an application by Zynga which I have found produces the best application games on Facebook (one of my other favourite ones is the Zynga Poker). Like many other games of this nature, you work up in levels as you go through the game. It is a very simple game to master with you, the player, starting with a small café (inside of the café only) and building up your café money to decorate and buy more food. Money can be earned via making food and serving it - simple!
There are various levels to go through and each level comes with new food, new items and other helpful things such as waiters who 'help' you run your café. These waiters can be employed from your friend list on Facebook.
When you cook the food on the stoves, you will find that each dish has a cooking time which is nothing like in real life. This is to enable you to time your meals so you are able to get back to the food before it spoils. There is a wide range of inventive dishes such as Voodoo Chicken salad which requires a spell to create, to the usual things as Herbed Halibut.
There is also a good range of different items to decorate your café with, with more items being added every now and again, each varying in price which keeps the game addictive as you need to continue saving up your money to buy extra items and decorations. You are also able to extend your café bit by bit though to be honest you have to safe for a long time for not much more to be extended.
I would like to have seen the outside of the café available to be decorated though as it is a simple game, it is already passing many other small games of this type so you cant complain - plus being free, you really cant complain!
The interaction in the game consists mainly on getting your cook to make the meals simply by selecting a stove, a meal and pressing a few times to 'prepare' the meal and then coming back later to serve it. The other interaction is when decorating the café by selecting the items you wish and placing them where you want. You can not edit the items at all except for turning them 45 degree angles.
You are able to zoom in and out of your café and change the quality slightly though that's about it.
As with many Facebook applications, there is also a gift sending and receiving option to send to your Facebook friends in hope they accept and become neighbours as the more neighbours you have, the more money you can get by visiting their cafes. Apparently there is also an award option coming soon though that has been 'coming soon' for a while now so I don't know if it is near getting here yet or not.
You are also able to design your character in a simple screen that enables you to change your appearence and clothing - some of which are free and others you have to spend cafe money on.
With the money situation, you also have the opportunity to buy money with real money though I have never been in to doing this as I don't see the point - firstly because why spend money on a free game anyways and secondly, it takes the fun away from earning the money on the game to build your café.
The layout and design of Cafe World is that of a simple one. It opens within the Facebook layout window, no seperate window and no full window option which is a shame. The game window itself is quite small and would be better being a little bigger as when you expand the cafe you are constantly scrolling up and down to see your full cafe. The tabs for options are at the top of the window (options avaliable mentioned above) and your friends who are on the game are listed below with options to visit their cafe and send them gifts. A simple layout, though any more advanced it may not run at all (see below).
This site uses java and is very memory hungry. I have found that after being on the game for ten minutes, it starts to slow, and if other windows are open it can run quite slow and often freeze, not only that game window, but the whole computer which is really annoying. Luckily Firefox saves my pages automatically so I can often get back to where I was, though of course, trying to do something like type in word when Café World is open can cause some problems.
The links on the game all seem to work absolutely fine - I have never had any problems with this and when the game is running fine, the links change from window to window averagely fast, though if it is playing up, which happens a lot, then it can take a while to load into different windows.
The graphics are not anything spectacular, and in a 2d outlook. The colour is great, though, so that is something.
Overall, the technical side of the site does need some updating and reviewing and can really get annoying at times, though it's the silly people like me who go back there for more!
Obviously, Café World will not be for everyone, though I have even found that many people who avoided it at first are now fans of it - showing just how addictive it can be! The great thing with the game is that it carries on without you, so even though you may become addicted, you will not have to spend every waking moment on it which in most peoples lives, that certainly isn't possible.
The game itself is growing in variety and inventiveness and personally, I really enjoy the creativeness of building up the décor of the café. It is not a huge game though is much bigger than many of this type and is easily accessed via Facebook. The only real problems with this site are the technical issues with freezing the computer which heres hoping that may change at some point (possibly when I have bored of the game!).
If you like these sorts of games, then you will love Café World - take a look, you may be surprised at how quickly you get addicted.
