I'm sure that Geoff Hamilton had nothing to do with the making of this garden Design software. He passed away in 1996 and his image is being used to make out that this software is reliable and relevant to the UK. It's not. It appears to originate from the US & they've put a photo of Geoff on the box.
Geoff was much loved and the Company selling this product should be ashamed of using the much love Geoff on the cover as it's such poor quality and an insult to his memory.
Many of the plants are irrelevant to the UK gardener and trying to design anything is a joke. It's old & clunky and takes up a huge amount of space on the hard drive and is virtually impossible to use.
I suggest a pencil & paper and a few good books if you want to design a garden. Definately ot this product.
I wasted my money, learnt my lesson and won't be buying anything like this again.
The wonderful thing about garden design is that everyone can do it, does not matter how little you know or how ham-fisted you think you are. Once you start, nature will pitch in too and, together you can’t fail to create something beautiful. Gardening may become an expensive business and might take a year or two of trail and error to get the right look, that’s why I invested in buying this great garden, designer. The designer allows you to draw up a plan of your garden and insert trees, paths, walls, flowers, sheds, greenhouses, grass, water features and any thing else that you may want in your garden. As you’re putting together your designs you can experiment simply by moving the plants and fixtures around the screen and zoom in on particular borders. The plant encyclopaedia is great not only does it explain when to plant your plants or shrubs it tells you what type of soil is required. On each plant in the encyclopaedia it will explain the height, temperature, lighting, watering and the width. When selected your plant or shrub just click on each calendar month and the plant and shrub will change to what it looks like in that month.
From GSP, Geoff Hamilton's Designer 3D Garden CD-ROM is one of the many garden design programs on the market. I was very disappointed with it. I found it difficult to use even after reading the instructions several times. However many times I tried I never got anything on screen that remotely looked like my garden. It all felt very remote and removed from gardening. It inspired me to turn the computer off and return to the old fashioned method of going outside and planting plants were I thought they'd look okay. My one faint bit of praise for the CD-ROM is the plant encyclopedia it includes. This is very useful and easy to use. The plant database includes photographs, height & width projections, flowering info, soil preference and whether it is poisonous/edible/medicinal/cut flower etc. But for this feature I could have bought a more in-depth specialist plant encyclopedia on CD-ROM.
