Good printer (Canon BJC 3000)

Advantages: Good quality, cheap, fairly small

I brought this printer about two months ago for just over a hundred pounds, for printing type as well as photographic output. The first thing you think when you get it out of the box is ‘where is the damn printer lead’, and the answer is it doesn’t come with one. Why do they imagine people wont need one; a hundred quid is a little expensive for an oversized paperweight.

That aside, the printer was very easy to set up under Windows 98 and works like a dream. There are four separate ink tanks to ensure that no ink is wasted when one colour runs out. I have not yet had to replace any ink tanks, which is pretty good going considering how much I have used it. I think that the ink cartridges are fairly inexpensive. It is also possible to insert a scanner cartridge for scanning in documents. Although this does not scan at a particularly high resolution, it is a pretty good selling point for the Canon.

There are quite complicated options for selecting paper type, output quality and suchlike. These allow you to set a very fast draft print, which looks reasonable if your not trying to impress your boss. Other options allow you to print to a very high quality, although this does have a large impact on the print time. It is possible to print very near photo quality, which seems to take forever.

Overall, I would recommend this printer, as it gives very good quality for not much money. I would not recommend skimping on a Lexmark; a friend of mine has gone through two.
