Advantages: Good quality photo prints, uses 5 colours of ink for better quality photos
Disadvantages: nosiy, all ink colours in one cartridge
Now this printer is not anything special. This was my first ever printer and it did last me a long time, about 8 years infact so it has a good life span, oh and it still works fine now, i just got a new multifunction printer so this current one is now in storage but i can still give a good review.
First things first, normal document printing, it is pretty good at this. Its not a super fast printer, infact its not that fast at all, but it does deliver fairly good quality text. There is only one paper tray so if you want to change the paper size, you have to remove the paper loaded, and put the new paper in, but this is not a problem. It goes up to A4 size.
As well as being able to print text. This printer can also print very good quality photos onto glossy paper. Because the paper goes through the printer in one direction the paper does not crease or bend at all and comes out onto the extendible tray at the front.
Printing high quality photos takes a while, several minutes, but it does deliver the quality. The quality is not perfect, but if you do not compare the prints to anything else, they look good. I did notice when i got my new printer, i printed the same photo on both printers and my new printers print was better, had more colour, but this epson printer is quite old, and for the time of its production the quality is brilliant. At the time this printer came out, it was one of the best photo printers around.
The ink system consists on a black ink cartridge, and a colour cartridge. This can cause problems as one cartridge contains 5 colours, so if one colour runs out, you have to replace the whole ink cartridge which can end up costing a lot, but the good thing is there is 5 colours instead of just 3 which is why the pictures ook good.
The printer is noisy when printing, especially when printing fast, and if you print in draft quality, you notice it as any sort of print, photos, text etc all look bad, but its a good option to make sure the page layout will look right.
The printer can connect to a computer either with a Parallel port, or USB port which was quite unusual for the time the printer came out.
On the front of the printer are 3 buttons, the power button, an ink button and a paper button. There are also some lights, a power light, a paper error light and two ink lights, one for black and one for colour. The ink light comes depending on which ink cartridge has run out. If the ink has run out, you just hold the ink button for 3 seconds and the ink tray will come to the middle of the printer so you can replace the ink.
The paper light comes on if there is no paper, or if there is a paper jam. Once you have replaced paper, just press this button and it will continue to print.
To get to the ink, the top cover just lifts open. This can be opened whilst printing without any disruption so you can check how it is printing.
The front paper tray acts as a front cover as well by pushing the extendible tray back in and pushing it up.
I was very happy with this printer and i got a lot of use from it. I did sometimes get problems with it, like ink running out soon after i had replaced it, or wasted ink from early prints not printing well but apart from this it has been a good printer.
Summary: This was a fantastic printer when it first came out, and is still ok today.
