HP Deskjet 1000
Advantages: Quick, cheaper ink, clear printing, compact
Disadvantages: have some issues with the draft printing (could just be me though)
When my old Lexmark decided to kick the bucket, I felt it was time for a change and went scooting down to my local Comet (when it was still around!)
I wanted a good printer, not too expensive because I'm not printing anything so impressive that it needs to be unbelievable quality. I also wanted something a little more compact as my last printers were all big and bulky.
The HP Deskject 1000 is a good size, simple design printer. Nice little rectangle thing, with a flip up support for paper going in and a flip down support for paper coming out. I liked that, being able to closes these both up tight against the printer keeping it neat and less intrusive on my desk.
It uses a power cable and a USB cable and comes with a driver disc and manuals.
[Quality / Printing]
Despite it being cheaper than my Lexmark I actually found the quality to be much better. The black has a nice sharpness and while the colour is not exactly wowing it's very good for a deskjet printer.
It also seems to dry quickly. Other printers I have had, when printing more than one page I would find the page coming out would scrape across the one just printed and something the ink would smear. This does not happen on this printer and the ink is instantly dry!
If you are printing several sheets, it prints the last page first and so on so when it's finished the document is ready for you without having to rearrange the pages. Since I often print large qualities, this really helps to speed things up!
Easy enough, plug it all in, put in the driver disc and follow the online instructions. Takes only a few minutes and I've installed it on PCs and laptop and there's never been a need for trouble shooting.
It has the usual options, print colour in black and white, print in draft. However the one thing I noticed was if I wanted to print in draft, when I selected it, the option reverted back to Normal Printing. I then have to select it again before it "sticks" not sure why it's doing that and when I'm doing a lot of draft work it becomes very frustrating. It does not print double sided but many of the small basic printers don't and I reuse all "old"paper anyway so do my own double printing.
Colour is clean and bright for such a simple printer, does a good job
For such a small printer it is very quick at getting the pages printed. I've had lots of printers and usually I could wander off and make a brew and it would still be printing. It takes just a few seconds to print a full sheet of text.
Amazon - £42.10 (via Personal Computers) - seems a little steep to me
Misco - £29.99
Argos - £34.99
Ink seems to range around £13 - £15 for black and £19 - £23 for a dual black and colour pack
Unlike some brands of cartridge like the Epson, HP cartridges can be recycled and accepted by many of the charity schemes if you like to pass your empties onto them. I believe they can also be refilled.
A smashing little printer, quick, clean and well priced.
Summary: A good little printer
