Advantages: Small, Cheap, Quick
Disadvantages: Build Quality
Before buying the 3650 I was already a fan HP printers. Having worked in an IT department I'd seen their bulletproof build quality first hand. I was looking forward to getting my hands on my own. Setup was quick as you'd expect nowadays, maybe 10-15mins including installing the drivers and then doing a simple calibration test. My first few pages printed very quickly and I was happy with the quality of the output. Then I decided to pop an envelope through. Clearly envelopes are like kryptonite to this particular model. After some very loud and annoying clacking the envelope went through and printed fine. I thought nothing more of it. Until I tried printing some other stuff. Before and after each print job it decided to make the same stupidly loud clacking noise, with the feed mechanism whirring away. Ironically it printed fine in between having it's little spasms. A quick look on the HP website revealed that this seemed to be a known problem with the 3000 series. I emailed the tech support, (who were to be fair very quick in getting back to me). They suggested powering the unit down. No joy I'm afraid. I took it back the next day. So in summary, I was very happy with the 3650 for the 2hrs and 12 or so sheets it managed. Its a quick, good looking and cheap printer. I'd love to comment on the print quality of images, but I never got that far. Its suspect build quality lets it down badly. Risk it if you want, just don't take an envelope within 20ft of it.

- 18/10/03 Well reminded, I forgot to mention that you'll need to buy a seperate USB cable like a lot of printers nowadays. I picked a cheap one up for £4. I'm sure a lot of people get them home only to find they need to go and get a cable, annoying. I can't recall whether this was made clear or not on the box, I only found out by reading some other reviews of it. |
