Pre-ramble This review is of the Hewlett Packard Deskjet 5550 printer. This printer has been available on the market now for about a year, so is still a relatively modern deskjet printer. The HP 5550 has a decent size memory and specification, and also has interesting styling. People round here say these printers look a bit like a mini spaceship! We have been using a number of these inkjet printers at the company I work for, probably for about a year now I’m not sure if these printers are still available, as I believe the HP 5800 series has been the direct replacement for them. I bought this printer about three months ago, based on some good reviews and a degree of brand loyalty to HP. My previous inkjet was an HP Deskjet 890C, which is a very reliable general purpose printer with reasonable running costs. The reason for upgrading was to get better quality photo prints from my digital camera. The 890C is almost adequate as a photo printer, but I wanted sharper, brighter, less grainy prints. The 5550 has USB and parallel connections, and a smallish external power brick. Following tradition, no cables are supplied, but these days USB cables are cheap and easy to buy. Just bought the HP deskjet 5550 from Dabs (17/04/2003) as they were selling it for £62.27 including VAT and delivery as a limited time, special offer (still available I think) and I must say that it is an excellent printer. Setting up was a breeze (I use Windows XP home edition) and everything worked straight out of the box. Followed the straight forward wizard on the setup disk which walks you through the setup and installation of the printer using either a USB cable or a parallel port cable, neither of which is supplied (cost me £2.50 to buy a USB cable. Seems a bit penny pinching on HP's part) and I was up and running first time with no effort at all. ...
