Advantages: Excellent Output, Durable, Reliable
Disadvantages: Drivers Difficult to Install
The HP PhotoSmart 1000 is a great printer to consider for purchase if you plan to use it in conjunction with a flatbed scanner or digital camera. It has a sexy black chassis that matches my laptop, and it has slots for digital camera flashcards built onto the side. The slots will accomodate 90% of the digital camera flashcards that are currently on the market, and it makes printing directly from the flashcard to the printer simple. Be very careful to save the driver installation instruction sheet, or you will have massive problems down the road. HP thought it would be satisfactory to put these on a halfsheet placed on top of an outdated book and then shrinkwrap it. The problem with this is, most people will lose a loose sheet of paper like that. Your computing life will be made very difficult if you can't find that sheet later. Trust me. My chief and main complaint about the HP PhotoSmart 1000 was the difficulty I experienced when loading the Win98 print drivers. The automated installation procedure could not locate two files that I had to manually download, and the instructions for loading the driver were both incomplete and confusing. My aggravation was completely forgotten, however, after the driver was successfully loaded and I was able to download and print some great photos from pdn-pix.com. The dpi can be as high as 2400 x 1200 dpi, when using the printer in PhotoRetIII mode. If you are easily frustrated when installing things, I would suggest you avoid setting up this printer yourself and, instead, seek the assistance of your local neighborhood guru.
