Advantages: cheapest, good resolution
Disadvantages: no USB, slow, no NT/Win2k, holds one cartridge only
Time to upgrade to a colour printer but don’t want to spend too much money? Lexmark Z11 is a great option for you! The installation is very simple and the printer even speaks to you if you like fancy things like that. It can handle quality up to 1200x1200 dpi (dots per inch) which is well enough for greeting cards, CD covers and invitations. With photo-quality paper you will get photo realistic printouts. Ok, this printer isn’t fast at all but if you aren’t rushing and don’t have a dead line the next hour, you will be just fine. The specifications promise 4 b/w ppm (pages per minute) and 2.5 colour ppm but the truth is closer to 3 and 1.5. At one point in time I installed Windows 2000 on my computer just to realise that the Z11 does not support NT/Win2k so watch out. It does support the new Windows Millennium (WinME), though. To my big disappointment, I didn’t find any USB port on the printer, so one has to use a parallel connection to the computer. Also, the printer can only hold one cartridge at a time so you have to switch between b/w and colour, depending on what type of print put you are making. I am still on my first set of cartridges but it looks like they are more expensive than other brands. Unfortunately, this will eliminate the benefits of a low purchase price in the long run.
