Advantages: Value For Money

Disadvantages: None

Printers come in many different shapes and sizes but fundamentally all do the same job. I have the Lexmark Z22 and have found it to be a useful and efficient providing good quality printouts relatively quickly.

The printer is quite compact and well designed. The paper feed tray fold down so that when it is not in use it uses less space and clutter. Likewise the tray to catch the printouts is extendable allowing it fit into the main printer section also leaving more room. Changing the cartridge is very easy as when the front section of the printer is lifted it slides to the centre allowing the old one to be taken out before a new one is clicked in.

It is compatible with Windows and Mac platform machines and is very simple to install. It comes with a CD that will launch when placed in the CD tray and then it will offer on screen instructions to make it as easy as possible. The interface for printing is basic and allows easy manipulation of certain options and gives a constant picture of how much is left in that particular cartridge.

It features Accu-Feed paper handling, which almost eliminates jams while handling a wide range of paper from envelopes to paper stock up to 150 lbs. It can handle a vast range of paper types such as coated, glossy, transparency and of course plain paper. This gives it wide versatility and proves very useful.

It is also a relatively fast printer as it can print 6.5 pages per minute in black and 3.5 pages per minute in colour. So now I turn to the important part. What are the printouts actually like?

The printer has a three quality settings Quick Print 600 Dots Per Inch (DPI.), Normal 600 DPI and High 1200 DPI. The quick print option provides surprising good print quality considering the speed at which the printout is produced. It is however far from perfect. It is good enough for draft copies, which is what it would it, is likely to be used for. The normal print option provides a good qualit
y print for documents and normal pictures. It is sharper and clearer than the quick print option but is still not perfect. The high 1200DPI option gives very good quality photo quality printouts and can be used in conjunction with a digital camera for printing pictures. It is very sharp and clear and has good colour reproduction.

All in all it is an excellent general-purpose printer that will suit most the needs of the average person. It certainly is excellent value for money as it usually retails about £99. If you are on the look out for a printer give this one a go.

Haven't heard of the Accu-Feed thing before - sounds like that could be quite useful, mine occasionally has paper jams! Chinny

I have a Lexmark 3200, but still prefer the Hewlett Packard printers.

Happy 2002 to you and yours.
