Advantages: Easy to use, Superb software, easy to install, Quality unbeatable, Upgradable for colour photos

Disadvantages: Price per page more expensive, Speed, Not as compact as other brands

Everyone has different priorities when buying a printer... but its hard to see how anybody who is a home/light business user sort could go wrong with this printer...

For starters its cheap to buy... mine cost me £72 but I had to shell out a fiver for a USB cable which isn't included.

The quality...
I thought it was so good that I decided to compare it with our University Laser printers... I printed the same clour pic in max resolution and I could not tell the difference... The quality cannot be faulted...

The software...
This is a BIG plus ... its one thing that few ppl ever check out when buying a printer but I compared this software with the Epsons and HPs that friends have... and I have more options and funky graphics... not to mention more functionality...

Upgradability...
If you are into printing photgraphs you can get get a special second colour catridge which adds three more colours to the standard colour catridge and gives much more brilliant results...apparently... haven't tried it yet... three colours satisfy me!

My quibbles....

Page per page the printer costs about 1/2 a pence more than the comptition (HP et.al.) but the quality is faultless. furthermore when yo change a cartridge on the Lexmark Z42 the printer heads are changed and quality remains consistently good. No other printer that I'm aware of does this.

Its slow... but no slower than similarly priced and more expensive competition.

Its louder than the HP... but thats ridiculously quiet

THE VERDICT:
In my humble opinion it is better than the competition... but that 1/2 pence does add up and if you only use your printer for draft copies where quality doesn't matter than you'd save on buying the other makes... but the Lexmark does have a draft output option (600dpi)

The Z42 comes with the Z42 series control program software which I have not had a problem with at all since installation...

The control program shows the status of your printing, ink levels in the cartridges, option to cancel print, cartridge functions such as nozzle cleaning and alignment. It also contains an options category that allows you to let the software run in the background and to shut it up if it starts talking to you... but I do enjoy having a chat with my printer even if it doesn't say much back... It shows it I really love it... thats probably why my software is not buggy... maybe my printer loves me back...

And yes the Z52 is better quality... but does it love you back?...

I agree Lexmark printers do grab the paper a bit aggressively... but no noticeable flaws are evident on the paper to the naked eye... but at 2.5 times magnification they are quite obvious...

Off to chat with my printer... you know daddy loves you... :-)

I have a Z2300, which is really noisy, and it eats ink. The software crashes frequently, but overall, it was worth the price for the image quality.
