And the Xerox offers another clear advantage over most ink jets: a built-in Ethernet port, so the printer can service every computer on the network. For offices that need a color printer, the NC20 is a much more reasonably priced solution than networkable color lasers, which are must faster, but much more expensive. The color is what this printer does best. With true and consistent colors, the Xerox's plain-paper graphics output rated excellent on our jury tests. The NC20 did a good job handling some tough graphical elements, but we were unimpressed with its photographic output. Images appeared dark, with overly prominent dithering patterns, even on the Xerox's special coated paper. Overall, the printer received a merely good rating for coated-paper graphics. Plain-paper text suffered from a major case of the splotchies, but the results were much cleaner on coated paper.
