Google Mouse Pad
Advantages: Good, stiff surface that doesn't slide on the desk
Disadvantages: Can affect optical mouse performance
What really is there to say about mousemats? Everyone has one but no-one tends to care about which one they have. I attended a medical conference recently and was given this Google Mousemat from a vendor. Don't ask me why Google were at a medical conference!
The mousemat is the typical size, roughly 9"x 9" with a rubber backing and a ridged plastic surface for moving the mouse around on. The rubber/foam works quite well at sticking to your desk and not sliding around, it leaves no residue on the desk afterwards however so you can feel safe in using it on a good kitchen or dining room table. The ridged plastic side is clear and white with the iconic google logo featured prominently alongside some coloured balls. I haven't seen the balls before but I assume they are some marketing ploy by the good people at Google.
The surface is hard and stiff, making it ideal for moving a mouse around on. There are few things more annoying than a mousemat the has a ton of give and the mouse sinks into. The ridges add a small bit of friction so that neither the mouse nor your hand will suddenly slide away. Previous reviews have given out about how the plastic refracted the optical mice sensors and sent the cursor flying around. I haven't found this to be a problem on my mousemat, or maybe it lies with my mouse. I'd say it may happen once or twice a day and it can be annoying but nothing debilitating. As a bonus this plastic surface is very easy to clean if you're ham-fisted like I am and manage to spill coffee on it with alarming regularity.
Overall I'm happy to recommend this mousemat, I wouldn't spend any money on it but if you're given one at a conference don't throw it out!
Summary: Good mousemat but nothing out of the ordinary
