Advantages: Quick settlement of vets fees

Disadvantages: Have a cut-off point of 8 years for dogs, irrepective of customer loyalty

When we bought a Cocker Spaniel puppy 9 years ago, we reviewed the pet insurance market and decided to take out a Direct Line policy.

During the following nine years, the only claims we made were for the occasional removal of a grass seed from his ears. with minimal cost to Direct Line after deduction of the excess charge.

And yet, because our dog as reached the ripe old age of 9 !! they want to increase the cost of the policy by 30% !!

When I rang to query this excessive increase, the young lady I spoke to was very quick to ask me if I wanted to cancel the policy !! I reminded her of the money that they had made from us over the years but all to no avail.

I have subsequently cancelled the policy and taken out a new one with E & L Insurance for a lot less money and similar insurance cover.

Summary: Direct Line don't seem to like older dogs. What price customer loyalty ?

I have heard of this happening with other insurance companies, so might be best to shop around.

I guess old dogs are more likely to be the subject of a claim, same as old people are.....I cannot get life insurance for the same rate as a 22 year old either..!

Oh dear - my dog is nine now and we insure her with Direct Line - I know what to expect at renewal date.
