Advantages: polite, comparitively inexpensive
Disadvantages: Not discovered any as yet
I am not expecting many readers under the age of 50 to be drawn to this review, but I think my experience with searching on-line for comparison quotes for insurances, might apply to any age group.
Let me begin. It won't take long.
Up until a year and a bit ago, I would often get and compare Insurance quotes using the insurer's own free phone numbers - a very tedious and time consuming process! After three different quotes I would be parched and ready for a cuppa.
The insurance policy on my old car was about to expire, and since I was about to purchase a new vehicle, decided to see, by logging in to the 'Go Compare' site, how much more the new car would cost me to insure.
Surprise -surprise!! Saga (online) quoted me a sum which was £20 CHEAPER than the insurance renewal cost of my old vehicle, despite the fact that the oldie was only worth a fraction of the newbie.
I thought I had better check with Saga by phone. It had to be a mistake!
Lo and behold, after giving them the same details as I had entered on-line the very nice lady at the other end of the phone quoted me - wait for it -
a sum in excess of £40 MORE than the online quote from the same company, for the same vehicle.
I was more indignant than angry, and said to her. "Why is it then, that you can offer me the same policy fourty-plus pounds cheaper on line?"
There was a slight, but significant pause before she replied, "You should not have been able to get a quote on line if you already have an insurance policy with us."
After a further short, polite exchange of views I hurriedly logged back on to the site and took out the online Saga policy. I was much relieved to find that I could still buy it at the same price and that the company had not registered me online as an exhisting customer -yet.
My renewal quote from them for this years policy was slightly increased, yet still almost £40 cheaper than their original phone-quote last year.
I went back to the Go Compare site when this years policy was due for renewal - only to find that Saga were not offering me an online quote, this time. Hey-ho.
Nevertheless, I am happy with Saga. They offer an excellent package at reasonable prices, but still cannot understand why there was such a difference in quotes for the same policy by the same company.
I know why I got through the net the first time, it was because the Saga online system had no files on me, and thought me to be a new customer.
Summary: It was an accidental but circuitous route, that got my policy quote reduced.

- 01/07/09 I love reading your reviews!
I had the same issues with Churchill. Went to Budget and got a HUGE reduction :) |

- 01/07/09 Lol. Sounds like Saga might be more interesting in gaining new customers rather than ensuring that the ones they've already got are totally happy. I suppose that many of us are creatures of habit so will stay with our providers unless they do something really bad. Bearing that in made, most companies will probably feel that as existing companies will be loyal they can concentrate on trying to get some new ones. |
