Advantages: My opinions on DooYoo
Disadvantages: This might not be the same as your opinion
Well, I've been on DooYoo for just over a month now and have finally lost that flashing border marking me out as a newbie! I don't know if DooYoo etiquette means that I've been here long enough to comment on the site, but I feel 'ready' to pass judgement so I'll take the risk!
Q1. How did you discover Dooyoo?
I heard DooYoo mentioned on one of the 'Make £10 a day' challenge threads on the Debt-Free Wannabe forum at www.moneysavingexpert.com
Q2. Why did you join?
After putting off joining for ages I had a look around the site. Once I read some of the reviews, I decided to give it a shot! (The idea of earning some Amazon vouchers towards the cost of Christmas was also a motivating factor I have to admit.)
Q3. What was your very first opinion on?
I wanted to review my pushchair as there weren't many reviews of it available online. It wasn't added at the time so I had to wait a few weeks to review that. I've done it now if you fancy a peek, lol.
I ended up reviewing Tesco nappies for my very first review as I read another review for them on DooYoo and I'd just finished a packet! My husband was not very impresssed with my choice of things to review. He was even less impressed with my decision to post reviews on the internet of such glamourous things as plastic breast pads and toilet cleaners!
Q4. Did you find it easy to get the hang of Dooyoo?
Yes. I didn't (and still haven't) use the Guided Tour option as the site seems pretty self-explanatory. The only area that I struggled with was how to rate other people's reviews fairly. I was really scared to give ratings less than 'Very Useful' for the first few weeks as I thought everybody would hate me and start slating my reviews. I've become more confident now as, unfortunately, some reviews really aren't worth the DooYoo miles they get.
Q5. Did you read other opinions before you posted your first one?
I read a few but I already knew what I like in a review and what I feel makes a good review. Whenever I plan to buy something expensive I always google for consumer reviews and like them to be concise, informative and well written. (Some of the reviews that earn crowns seem to get them for length as much as anything else. I have to say that I think a review can be overly long and you lose some of the enjoyment if it goes on too long!)
I also hate reading reviews with poor spelling or written in terrible English. Fair enough - everybody makes the odd typo but I don't want to read any old rubbish, sorry. If I read really poor quality reviews written by somebody, I don't tend to go back and read any more.
Q6. Do you write no/some/many comments?
I have written quite a few. There are some writers on here who I already feel I 'know' and I feel more inclined to write comments on their reviews, just to acknowledge that I've really enjoyed reading them.
I love reading comments that people have added to my review and was delighted with all the positive comments and responses to my first few reviews.
I've nominated a lot of reviews and haven't put that in my comments as I didn't want people to think I was just putting that and not doing it! I also saw a few comments saying that the nomination process was supposed to be kept anonymous so I've just been a secret nominator. Hope it was a nice surprise to the lucky recipients.
Q7. When you click on the list of Newest Reviews, do you read your friend's opinion no matter what they're on/according to subject no matter who has written it/preferably the opinion of new members?
I don't have as much time online as I'd like so I tend to stick to reading reviews by people who I know write well and whose reviews I'm going to enjoy. I always 'return rates' though and if somebody has taken the trouble to rate one of my reviews, I'll log on to their profile and read some of theirs. I only tend to read reviews on topics and products that are interesting to me. I don't watch films, for example, so rarely read DVD reviews.
Q8. Do you write your opinions in one sitting?
I've started a few and given up and saved them as a word document to go back to when I get more inspiration. I've even taken to writing notes of the back of a used envelope when an idea for a review has come to me when I'm not online!
Q9. Do you use a spell check?
I'll probably sound up myself if I say that I'm generally a good speller, so don't bother. I just proof-read my reviews and edit before submitting but the odd typo probably slips through.
Q10. Do you think you can improve your chances of a crown if you suck up to a guide?
I don't suck up but I am flattered when a guide reads one of my reviews and leaves a positive comment or rating. I feel the same when an established member does though.
I think most of the guides seem really friendly and welcoming. There are a few that could reconsider the tone of their posts and how their 'advice' could be perceived as out and out criticism (particularly by newbies.) I haven't been on the receiving end, luckily, but I have seen some rather cutting remarks on other people's reviews. (I've also read some crowned reviews by the same guide and, frankly, was bored to tears. I marked it as 'very useful' anyway so that might count as sucking up!!)
Q11. Are you a member of a forum or chat room?
Yes - I'm a regular on www.moneysavingexpert.com
Q12. Does it get to you when members praise or condemn you?
I should act all mature and say that it doesn't bother me because there are much more important things in life etc etc but, yes, I'd be gutted if somebody marked one of my reviews as 'not useful!' I was upset when I got my first (and only, so far) 'useful' rating! (I did get over it though - life's too short and I'm a grown woman.)
Q13. What did you do with your spare time before joining Dooyoo?
I still have other things to do in my spare time and, unfortunately, I don't have as much time to spend on DooYoo as I'd like to. I have my boys to care for and the evenings can get spent doing much more mundane stuff like housework etc as well as spending time online and trying to have a social life out in the real world too!
Q14. What do you wish for the future?
I'd like to know why I've not been receiving any extra DooYoo miles for making suggestions for new products?! I'd also like to earn a crown!!
Edit May 09: Still here, still addicted and did get that crown along with ten other crowns!
