Advantages: Addictive and you earn money.
Disadvantages: addictive and the occasional member doing it for the money.
I've been on Dooyoo for less than a month now and it already seems to have taken over a lot of my life. I'll admit that at first I started out reviewing with the aim of earning myself a bit of money. It hasn't taken long for the desire to write good, accurate reviews to take over and though knowing I've earnt a little bit more is always good, expressing my opinion on my interests is far better. I can't really compare this with other money making schemes on the Internet, my only other attempt to earn any cash from my surfing was an abortive trial of a pay to surf system. As a way to earn money it isn't bad, writing a review gains you 500 points and having a review read by a member gains you 50. These will certainly change as Dooyoo gets more popular, but that's not going to stop me writing my opinion. Of course you can't just work to earn money for yourself and it's important to spend time looking at the works of others. It's very easy to just keep writing reviews, but it's important to get a sense of community and look at what other people think. Where possible I try to rate the opinions of others, though I do find I'm reticent to give the more negative 'somewhat useful' as I don't have the anonimity of the 'not useful' option. Perhaps I'm just a coward, but I'd like to see an anonimity option for the meta-reviewing. I can't help feeling that I'm finding far too many short reviews these days. I accept that it's harder to say a lot on some topics, but it does annoy me when a member has consistantly written short reviews without apparent concern. Much as any opportunity to earn money is welcomed, Dooyoo needs people to make the effort to give worthwhile contributions which will have long terms value. No one is going to bother with reviews when they just don't say very much. That's enough said about a topic I'm sure many of us who are Dooyoo
addicts already feel strongly about. In my time at Dooyoo, I've managed to attain the position of Games Assistant and also get an entry into the Hall of Fame (guess that leaves guru to go). It's good to think that in such a relatively short space of time I have become quite involved with Dooyoo. When emailing editors of Dooyoo categories I've always found them helpful and friendly. I find if I want something added for me to review the quickest way is to email the appropriate editor and it will usually be up within the day. Responsive, friendly and open to suggestions it all makes for a strong feeling of involvement. The end result is it's just added to my addiction. Lot's of people have had their say about Dooyoo, so I avoided reading too many before I wrote mine. I doubt I've added much new to this section, but thought it was time I had my say. Dooyoo is a great idea, I'll be providing reviews for a long time to come yet. I hope they can get the advertising and tie in deals with other sites to keep running things so well. I just hope I can keep it from infringing on my day job as well.

- 13/08/00 You're right vhart, some things are just to hard to write long opinions on. I noticed that I could review the shampoo I use if I really wanted to, but I don't think I could really say that much of use about it.
As for user ratings, I do use te Somewhat useufl occasionally, but will admit that I often just don't rate the review if I feel I'm going to have to be negative about it. The anonimity of not useful ensures that if an opinion really isn't useful I will say so. I'm not really sure how serious an issue revenge rating is, most of my opinions haven't been rated enough to really show any example of this. I suspect whatever method you apply to rating reviews their will always be a way for some to exploit it. |

- 13/08/00 I do use the Somewhat Useful rating, because that's what it's there for. I also think the anonymity of Not Useful should be removed. If people resort to revenge rating, at least the rest of the community could see who these low-lifes are and avoid their opinions; if they've even written any. |

- 13/08/00 Agree with a good deal of what you've said. I think length of review depends a lot on what you are reviewing, sometimes, there isn't a great deal to say about a certain thing, but I do usually like a bit of background. Sometimes as well, I think opinions can be a bit too long.. if I'm reading about a place to go on holiday, I don't really want a list of hotels to stay in. Also agree about the ratings thing.. I don't really like rating people negatively, and do it quite rarely, although recently, I've rated a lot more 'somewhat usefuls' than I did before! |
