I suppose this is what DooYoo is all about is it not? As a price comparison and a review site. As a review site persoanlly I think Dooyoo is unmatchable and if it is I'm not aware of it! But as a price comparison site? I'm not so convinced.
Firstly a problem is the overally layout of the site in comparison to other price comparison sites. When you select an item the areas of Dooyoos concern are split into tabs, overview price comparison etc. which is the way in which Dooyoo has decided to deal with having various aspects of products it displays whereas a price comparison site is usually only concerned with one. While this is not particuarly confusing I would found it less cluttered to have a seperate search for price comparison, so Dooyoo would be split effectively into two different sites, a review site and price comparison site.
I think another improvement would be indicator of the range of price for a product, on a price comparison site you will see for example, iPod Touch £160-220 or whatever (I have no idea if that is correct!) Dooyoo does not do this which I think is to the detriment to the ease of use of the system.
I'm going to be truthful in that I don't use Dooyoo as a price comparison site, I would much rather use PriceRunner. Sort it out Dooyoo and I might give you a chance!
I often wonder how many of those of us who are busy writing reviews and earning our fifty pence pieces actually stop and think what the whole purpose of our activity is, why should a company be willing to pay up over fifty pence a time for our opinions on a wide range of products and services. The fact of teh matter is that Dooyoo generates its revenue from both the advertiser payments it gets and also the hits when people use the price comparison functions of the site and click through to the product links of the companies websites. Just looking to the left of my text box I can see a number of products with the prices displayed that have links to sites such as Amazon, ebay and Marks and Spencer to name but three.
Personally I do not find the price comparison function of the site the greatest and tend to prefer other sites for this such as Kelkoo, I frequently find things cheaper from other search engines than the Dooyoo one as when I click through from Dooyoo often the advertised price has changed on the host products website.
Still as a starting point Dooyoo does have its uses and the consumer reviews are also very helpful when making a buying decision.
... or should that be "Hello? Central?" Answers on a postcard, please. Well. Hi! Did you ever look at the shortlived "SHOPPING" tab that appeared on the old-style dooyoo, just before they launched Aurora? It was awwwwwful. On a broadband connection it took forty five seconds to load dontchaknow. Odd they sent a newsletter out about it, because it's gone now. Oh well, we still have Price Comparison Functionality, don't we? And as that's about the only fuuuuuuuunctionality we do have at the moment, I thought I'd investigate it. Perhaps I should loosen Amazon's grip on me and consider buying my books elsewhere. Let's see what the dooyoo shopping bot can offer me. On the homepage of the books category you'll find The River Cottage Cookbook by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall. Now he's a current hero of mine (watch him on Channel Four, Tuesdays at 8pm) and it so happens that I recently bought his book from Amazon for £9.99 (list price £25) in the Amazon sale. They're currently flogging it at £12.50. Did I make a wise purchase? Over to dooyoo functionality for a report. I have to go to the Print Books homepage first though - 8 broadband seconds to get from the new in list to the front page and another 25 broadband seconds to load the almost 400kb page I need if you're interested - once there, I click on Price Comparison and dooyoo functionality lets me know that I can buy Hugh's book from W H Smith for £12.99 including post and packing which is cheaper than Amazon's current rate but more expensive than the sale price I paid. Um.. that's the only result returned though. Odd. I open Kelkoo (who I believe are the people dooyoo use and receive affiliate money from when we use this functionality of theirs and especially if we actually buy something) and search for the same book. This gives me five results from three shops although Smiths are still the cheapest. Hmm... one r
esult. That can't be right. I hop back to the Print Books page and check the prices for A Child Called It, one of dooyoo's most popular subjects for review (but not a book I like for many reasons, maybe I'll write about them some day, on Ciao probably). I get five results for different versions of the book but ALL are from W H Smith again! Again, I check Kelkoo itself which returns eighteen results from four shops with Tesco and Blackwell's both coming in cheaper than Smiths. I do it again for several other books. Same thing. Smiths Smiths Smiths Smiths Smiths. Smithetty Smithetty Smith Smith Smith Smith. Oops. Dear me. I don't think I'll bother investigating further. I think I've maybe discovered that a one star rating is appropriate for dooyoo's Price Comparison Functionality and I think I'll stick to Amazon. Keith played this game with me and he understands why it's so forked but I'm thick and I don't get it at all, nor do I want to. Do you? I can ask him to explain in the commentary section and all will be clear I'm sure to those of you cleverer than I. I shan't be buying through dooyoo clicks if it's one star functionality when I check up on it though, and that's all I need to know. Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court. Heehee. Hello Central. Are you there? Have I pulled you to pieces enough yet?
