Advantages: Great sites for info and fun
Disadvantages: wastes time
On average I spend at least two hours on the internet every day, whether this being a quick glance while I’m at school or getting funny eyed at home at night. Millions of people have access to the internet at home now and we even have the technology to go on the internet wirelessly and now on our mobile phones. What a technologically advanced life form we are! Every night I have to check on a few websites just to see the daily changes that have occurred. This is like my internet ritual and if I don’t do it, I can become quite cranky. So without anymore delay I will put forward my top ten favourite websites!
10) www.themoviespoiler.com
This site is extremely useful if you have ever missed the start or the ending of a film before. It has hundreds of movie descriptions in its database. All you do is find the movie you’re interested in and up comes a quite lengthily description of that film. It tells you exactly what happens in the film from start to finish. It doesn’t drag on too long and it does keep to the point. I always look on here if I ever miss the ending or I don’t understand a film. If it is a complex film that does need a bit of an explanation, at the end of the films descriptions are various evolutions of the film and what the writer of the description thought the film was about. This is quite a useful site but not really one id go on very often.
9) www.tv.com
This is a search engine for television shows. Everything you would need to know about the shows you love is on here. If you need to know something about a certain episode of a programme then this is the site for you. It has actor listings for every episode. A description of episodes for every programme, who directed each episode and when the air date for the episode was. It has a list of top ten shows which if you are registered you may vote upon. Each episode of a programme can also be voted upon by users and is given a score out of ten. If you are registered you may also post messages on the site discussing with other users your favourite shows, actors etc. To register it is a simple matter of putting in your name, age and email and other minor details. If you register with sites often then this should be no problem.
8) www.ciao.co.uk
Many of you will already be aware of this website but for all who do not know about ciao here is a run down. Ciao is pretty much like dooyoo. If you are registered you are able to post reviews on your favourite things such as books, DVDs, games and television programmes. What is different to dooyoo is how you earn money. When you look at a product on ciao, you will be able to see if it has a pound sign next to its name. If it does then this means that every rating you get will earn you 0.5p. If there are two pound signs you will receive 1p, if there are 3 signs you will get 2p. You cannot get vouchers from this site but instead you are able to transfer the money from your ciao account straight into your bank account. You must have a minimum of £5 to make the transfer.
7) www.ebay.co.uk
It is probably one of the fastest growing companies of all time and for good reason. This site sells almost everything from plane tickets to socks and shoes. All you have to do is register and you are able to bid upon any item that you wish. Type in the product that you wish to find, search through the amount of products found and pick the one which you think is the best priced and bid upon it. It’s as simple as this! When it comes to bidding it is the most exciting part of the website. If you have ever been to an auction you will know why. When you find a product just press the button which says bid now. Type in how much you want to bid and wait to see what happens. Sometimes if it is a popular product many people will be bidding on it at one time. This means you have competition. I love this site and find it extremely useful for whenever I want a bargain and can’t be bothered to go shopping. Sometimes you can get really lucky with some products like my Nan who bid on a computer and ended up winning it for £200. Unfortunately for the owner he forgot to put a reserve on this product and the computer was actually worth about six times the amount she paid for it!
6) www.s-cool.co.uk
As most of you are probably aware by now, I am still at school, sigh. The good thing is that I’m in sixth form doing my A-Levels. Like every other student I sometimes need help with my work and when revising for exams or just need an extra bit of information, I go onto this site. It provides information on many A-Level subjects and gives quick, easy to understand chunks of knowledge about the subject. It also gives practice exam questions to help you understand how to answer the questions to get full marks. This site gives little questionnaires to help you with decisions based on career and subject choices. It also gives lots of information about part time jobs for students to get involved in. Overall this site is very useful and I always use it when I am getting closer to exam periods.
5) www.terrygoodkind.com
Very soon I will be writing a review on one of my favourite authors, this being Terry Goodkind. He is a science-fiction writer and has written the simply superb Sword of Truth series. This site gives a bundle of information about the author and all of the books. It gives updates about what is happening with the most recent novel and information about book signings. It has a fan board where fans of the novels can post messages to each other about their favourite novels and characters and discuss topics about the novels. This is a great site for all Terry Goodkind fans.
4) www.amazon.co.uk
My fourth and third choices are pretty much the same. Amazon is a shopping website where you can buy all sorts of products such as DVDs and games over the internet fast and easily. The only problem with this site I feel is that it is a tad more expensive than other shopping websites and you also need to spend over £15 to get free delivery. It is useful however as you can get gift vouchers for this site over many various websites, dooyoo included. You can read and write reviews on this site, however they have to be brief.
3) www.play.com
Now this is the shopping website that I prefer. It is much cheaper than Amazon for many of its products and it also has free delivery no matter how much you are spending. This site has many competitions for various prizes. At the moment there are prizes such as an Ipod Nano, a Jamie Oliver book, an Xbox 360 and many more. For some reason I find that this site is presented much better than amazon.co.uk and seems easier to negotiate around. The one disadvantage to this site compared to amazon.co.uk is that on here you are unable to get gift vouchers and therefore you always have to pay the full price for a product.
2) www.dooyoo.co.uk
Our glorious site, much like ciao but better in many ways. I like how on dooyoo it is much easier to get around the site and writing reviews is lesser of a hassle than on ciao. Here it is quick, simple and easy to use. You can get your voice heard, make friends and even make money off the reviews you write. On dooyoo, once you write a review you will gain 30 dooyoo miles every single time another member reads your review. 30 miles is basically 3p. Once you get to ten pound, which really isn’t that hard to do, you can cash in your dooyoo miles. You can either get this in amazon.co.uk vouchers and after ten pound they are redeemed in 5 pounds, or you can donate your money to a charity of your choice. Another way of getting the cash easier is to get to 50,000 miles (£50) and then cash in you miles and get a cheque sent in the post. However you need to get 55,000 for this because of postal charges. I love this site and find that I am slowly getting very addicted to it. I spend most of my time on the internet on this site and I love writing reviews on all my favourite things and it is nice to get my opinion heard. Getting registered is simple, all you do is put your name, age and email in and basically you’re done.
1) www.imdb.com
My all time favourite site is definitely imdb, this stands for the Internet Movie Data Base. I have been looking at many other top ten website reviews and I’ve realised that many people put this as their number one spot, and it’s for good reason. This site is magnificent. As you are aware I am one nutter of a movie fan. I love films and it is my aim in life to watch as many as I can. This site helps me in many ways as it is entirely devoted to films, actors and it also give information on television programmes, but not in much depth. If you ever need information about a certain film, or you’ve forgotten who was in a movie, then this is the site for you. It has a simple search engine and all you do is type in a movie title or an actor’s name and hey presto, you have results which you choose your name from. If you are registered on the site, which only takes typing in a few details about yourself, you are able to vote on daily polls. Vote a film out of ten, post messages about films and actors. If you are truly stuck and are desperate to find something out about a movie, actor etc there are the main boards. These are many separate boards in which you can post a question and many users will get back to you within a very short amount of time. This is a wonderful site for movie lovers and I urge many of you to use it like so many millions around the world are already doing!
So there you go my favourite websites on the internet. You may agree or disagree with some of my choices but they are all quite interesting to go on. A couple that didn’t get on the list but are worthy contenders are www.comingsoon.net which is a site for updated news on movies and http://www.fetchfido.co.uk/games/menu/games_menu.h tm go on this link and it takes you to a site filled with free online games for whenever you are bored!
Thanks for reading!
