Advantages: Great resources for practical information
Disadvantages: Maybe not the most entertaining list ever ;-)
Well, I suppose another one in the pile won't hurt! After reading up on some of the favourite websites reviews from others I had a good long think about those that I'd deem my top ten and was shocked at how practical they were and a little pleased with myself that it wasn't all 'fluff'.
I work as an information officer (think a librarian, only sexy) and a fair few of mine are good general purpose current awareness sites, as it's important that I keep informed for both work purposes and because it's good to be informed.
*News*
1. www.timesonline.co.uk - Excellent source of UK and financial news.
2. www.guardian.co.uk - Another good source for UK news, also visited for lifestyle articles and financials.
3. www.reuters.com - My first port of call for world news (specifically US-related). The writing quality isn't always top notch, but it's great for statistics and breaking news.
*Money*
I never used to give a hoot about my finances - I either had enough money to get by on or I was scrabbling together the cash for a pack of pasta (awww!) Now that I have a firmer footing on the career ladder I'm keen to make sure that I pay off my student debts and invest wisely for a stress-free future. I used to live in Partick (Glasgow) and even though it wasn't a particularly poor part of the city, I was always struck by the sad crowds of pensioners smoking their lives away and waiting outside the Post Office to collect their small weekly stipend from the government. This convinced me to save for my retirement!
4. www.if.com - Words are all well and good, but action is better. This is an easy to use portal where I manage a range of linked savings accounts for my day to day cash needs.
5. www.fool.co.uk - A site with some reasonable financial journalism (on investment). While some of their stories aren't so hot, they're usually thought-provoking.
6. www.moneysavingexpert.com - A staple for all of us trying to pay off our debts. I largely live in the forums here.
7. www.legalandgeneral.com - Not the most fun site ever, but informative and the easiest place for me to track the success of my ISAs and some other investments that I hold.
We all have to shop and even though I'm in the middle of paying back about £5,000 worth of unsecured debt, there are some purchases that just can't be avoided. For that reason, I'm including:
*Shopping*
8. www.dooyoo.co.uk - My new favourite source of free CDs! I've found that the investment of some of my time in writing a good quality review for general consumption is rewarded by ratings and comments from a very friendly bunch of like-minded consumers. Great for checking things out before you buy and cuts through advertising guff to get straight to the point.
9. www.quidco.com - The best cash back site that I've come across. There's seldom a purchase to be made that I can't get money back from and the small monthly amount I make here goes straight into the savings! Recent highlights have included money back on a holiday to Greece and £85 for opening an ISA that I was already opening anyway!
Last but not least, every man needs a bit of relaxation away from the stresses of work, finance and the daily commute! I'm currently hooked on a wonderful strategy game called Anno 1503 (I've written an embryonic review on it) and it's ridiculously complicated. When I need a little help setting up supply chains or avoiding pirates I go to the last entry on my list.
10. www.capsu.org/1503 - Ok, this one is pretty specific to me and won't mean squat to most people, but it's a great resource for a fun game and it genuinely helps me relax and focus on something other than the real world.
*Also rans*
There were a couple of really obvious contenders that might have made this list but were taken out for being useful, but awfully generic!
{11} www.google.co.uk - UK portal for the world's best search engine, period.
{12} www.hotmail.co.uk - Because it's good to keep in touch.
{13} www.bbc.co.uk/food - More recipes than you can point a sharp stick at!
{14} www.accidentalsmallholder.net - A great site about a Scottish couple running a smallholding. This sort of holistic lifestyle appeals greatly and I'd love to be able to fend for myself more by growing my own food and by minimalising my impact on the earth.
Not the craziest bunch ever, thanks for reading my ramblings (and who knows, maybe you'll pick up one that you'd missed previously?)
Summary: Some sites that I couldn't do without.
