Advantages: Brilliant resources for knowledge and pure entertainment
Disadvantages: Time consuming and addictive
Here is a list of my personal 'top ten' favourite websites. It's really difficult to choose ten only as any aficionado of the internet will tell you.
So here it goes:
*1* (www.deadoraliveinfo.com) (if your anything like me and your mind wanders to an actor or actress that you haven't heard of in a long time and you begin to wonder if they are even still alive) then this is the place to go. Packed full of information about most famous people, the site informs you if they are still alive or dead, and the age of the person living, or the date of their death. Also given is the cause of death. A bit macabre I know, but come on guys and gals, we all want to know don't we?
*2* (www.archive.org) If you want to see what pages of a particular website used to look like then this is a great place to visit. Just type the address of the website you are interested in into the 'wayback machine' and it will show you all available dates a 'snapshot' was taken of a particular website. Seeking out the Dooyoo website, it will show you what the site 'looked like' as far back as August 15th, 2000. Fascinating stuff!
*3* (www.wordsmith.org) If you visit this website and click on the link 'internet anagram server' on the left hand side, a little gem of a page opens up where you can type in any word and it will give you a fascinating list of available anagrams for that word. Try your own name and see what happens. For example, using the name Margaret Thatcher' brings up 13,612 available anagrams including 'Great Charm Threat', ..'A Thatcher Rat Term',.. and 'Great March Threat'.
*4* (www.cbfsms.com) If you're a bit of a cheapskate like me, then this site will allow you to send text messages for free to a mobile phone. You can also receive replies to your text messages which will be sent to a page on the website and not to your mobile phone. Still, a great idea if you want to save those vital pennies!
*5* (www.medicdirect.co.uk) A great resource for all things medical. Included in this fantastic website are videos, a virtual tour of your body, dental health, diet and nutrition, disorders glossary and an A-Z of illnesses and conditions. And that's just the start. This site is a comprehensive and independent resource for anyone worried about an ailment, or its symptoms and treatment.
*6* (www.theanswerbank.co.uk) Need an answer to anything, then this is the site for you. Post your question on the site and the very friendly 'AnswerBankers' will try their utmost to soothe your furrowed brow. Also if you know something of value, then answer other peoples queries and soothe their furrowed brows in return! Nicey nicey.
*7* (news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday) This little gem allows you to see what was making the headlines on any particular day in history. Just search for the required date using the drop down menu and you will be supplied with fascinating events that shaped and changed the world on any given date. Also included are video and audio of most events, and an authoritative account of events and their conclusion. Brilliant!
*8* (www.remember.org) This poignant website deals with the horrors of the Holocaust! Detailing such things as those gruesome camps, images and eyewitness accounts of the atrocities. Take a 'virtual' tour of the camps which reveal the dreariness and utter despair these poor unfortunate people must have felt in their hour of need. Distressing black and white photos are also shown with women and children huddled together, unknowingly only minutes away from being gassed. Chilling and depressing, these things must stay in the memory and never be forgotten.
*9* (www.everyhit.com) Ever wondered what was number 1 in the music charts on any particular day? Well wonder no more. This useful site will tell you all you need to know about that number one hit, and a lot more besides. It will tell you the date it entered the charts and how long it remained there. The site is completely searchable by simply typing the information you require into the relevant boxes. Find out about any artist, and what position they reached in the charts, including dates and title of the song .
*10* (www.midomi.com) This clever little site allows you to hum, sing, whistle or play any tune into your computer microphone or headset and then searches its vast 'music database' which will reveal the title and singer of the song to you. So, if like me and a tune suddenly buzzes around my head and you can't get it out of your mind untill you know what it is, then just hum or play the tune into your microphone and voila! No more brain racking or mental blocks. It even works if you just remember a few bars or a line or two of the song, but obviously the more of the song you 'play', the more accurate it will be!
So, there's my 10 fav websites!. I hope one or two of them will be of interest to the reader.
Thanks for taking the time to read them!
Summary: A blend of factual and entertaining websites.
