Advantages: I like them all

Disadvantages: You may not like them

I like a lot of the same websites that other people generally write about on this website...wikipedia, facebook, various shopping websites etc. but I thought it would be more interesting if I listed my favourite websites that aren't so commonly written about on here. So, here they are:

1. Religioustolerance.org
I have a big interest in religion. I love reading things about my own religion and about other peoples religions. I find it helps me to develop my own faith further and to understand other people, both very important things to me.
Religioustolerance.org is in my opinion one of the best places to read about religions. The main reason why I like it so much is that they aim to be completely neutral. I don't think that it's possible to be 100% neutral but the people who write for this website are as neutral as it's possible to be, in my opinion.
They write about a huge range of religions and theological theories and debates. This is another positive thing about this website, there is so much information available and so much of it on religions that aren't so common in this country. I've had my eyes opened to many religions that I never knew existed before visiting this website.
I have at times found it difficult to find that information that I want on this website, I think it's because there is so much information there it can be difficult to wade through it all to find wht you want. There are also a lot of adverts on the site which annoy me.
Overall an excellent site, very informative and interesting.

2. amnesty.org.uk
I have been an amnesty supporter for a number of years now and absolutely love their website.
First of all it allows me to campaign really easily for human rights. I have an account with them (website accounts are free) so all I have to do is log in, find a campaign that I want to support and then click the button that says to send an email. Campaigning really couldn't be easier (although it's no excuse to get lazy!).
The other good thing about this website is that it contains so much information about human rights and human rights abuses, and it's updated really regularly. They have an entire section for reports and factual documents, as well as a section for the latest news.

3. schools-out.org.uk
Although the law has changed recently young LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) people still face institutionalised homophobia in schools and are more likely to be bullied than other young people. Schools out are an organisation working towards equality in schools.
I really like their website because of all the information that it contains (noticing a pattern here?). On an academic level I like this website because it provides me with information that isn't available in other places. Homophobia in schools doesn't seem to have been researched as much as other forms of discrimination like sexism and racism so this website is really valuable to me on an academic and professional level.
I think that the work that they do is really important and it's good to see the progress that they're making.

4. nspcc.org.uk/inform
NSPCC Inform is the only specialised online child protection resource in the UK (according to their website) this makes it a very valuable resource for me and anyone else working in child protection or studying anything in this area.
It's so difficult to find free information online that will be valid in an essay or dissertation so I was very pleased when I found NSPCC inform. I've been able to find a lot of excellent articles about many forms of child abuse and bullying using this website and all of them for free! (Very important when you're a student.)

5. livejournal.com
I've been blogging on livejournal since 2002 and although I'm not as active on there as I used to be I think it's one of the best blogging sites. Livejournal can be a little bit difficult to find your way around at first, especially because it's such a big website with so many members and so many groups but when you do learn how to navigate the site it's fantastic.
Livejournal accounts are free and allow you to make posts to your journal, join groups and post them and post comments on friends journal entries. You can customise your journal to make it look however you want.
The thing I like best about livejournal is that you can control who reads your posts and which posts they can read. You can add people to your friends list and then put them into groups and then only allow certain groups to see posts that you don't want to share with everyone.
There are groups for just about everything on livejournal and not all of them are to my taste but I think it's good to have groups to suit everyone.

6. cancerresearch.org.uk
My father has terminal cancer and my step father is a cancer survivor and the way that I tend to deal with things is by arming myself with as much knowledge as possible (which doesn't help at all when someone is dying, but it's good to know what's coming so you can prepare yourself as much as possible).
The Cancer Research Website has really helped me. As you would expect they have information on all types of cancer as well as some very practical advice for people suffering from cancer and their loved ones.
I would highly recommend that everyone visits this website and reads about how to reduce the risk of getting cancer. Also highly recommended for anyone with cancer or who has loved ones who have cancer.

7. Stonewall.org.uk
Stonewall is an organisation that campaigns for the rights of LGB (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual) people in the UK. The website contains a lot of information about the rights that LGB people have and legislation on LGB rights, as well as some studies that stonewall have done about homophobia and biphobia. It's very useful to LGB people but I also think it's a good website for people who don't have any understanding of LGB issue's because I'm sure it would help to increase their understanding and knowledge.

8. writetothem.com
This is a website where you can contact your MPs. Very simple idea, they have all the contact details for MP's in the UK, you write the letter you want to send to your MP, you put in your postcode and this website then sends the letter to your MP.
I write to my MP quite frequently about various issues and this just makes it so much easier!

9. Ethicalconsumer.org
This website is excellent for anyone who wants to live as ethically as possible. I use it mostly to find out which companies are being boycotted and the reasons why they are being boycotted so that I can decide if I want to join the boycott. There are other things on the website, like articles about being ethical and when I've read them they've always seemed interesting but to be honest I don't tend to spend much time reading the articles on this website, I use it mostly for the list of boycotted products and companies.

I've used LJ for years as well, but there's some websites on here I didn't know about so thank you for that!
