Top Ten Websites
Advantages: Well, I can offer some variety if nothing else!
Disadvantages: I need to get a life?
Thank God for the internet. I have a massive long commute, all my closest friends have long since moved miles away and I have more interests than is humanly healthy. So....I hope you might find something enjoyable in the top 10 websites that keep me connected to the world.
1 - Facebook
Obviously choice. Sad to say that at times this is the only way I keep up with birthdays (I'm terrible at dates) and with what my friends are up to. For some reason it's latest upgrade has rendered it's chat function useless on my account, but it was always jumpy and friendships should never be conducted purely through facebook anyway! A great one for connecting with tenuous or old pals and being reassured you've not strayed too far from your roots when someone "likes" what you're trying to put across!
2 - Twitter.
This was a major slow burner with me - it took years to get to grips but now, with the right mix of people to follow and news feeds, this is essential and keeps me sane via the Blackberry app on the massive commute to work.
3 - Racingpost.com
Professional interest - I work in this industry. Declarations, betting, bloodstock news, editorial news, everything horseracing and massive database information.
4 - eBay
Anyone who has bought a house knows what this is like. You have to take everything, you dump it in the most easily hidden place, you unpack what you need and months later you realise that all the things you thought you HAD to have no matter WHAT are...doing nothing. Except making the place look a mess and taking up room. And then there's the bills....eBay may take a ludicrous amount of money in fees and commission but if you get the free listing weekends it can really help you out. If only there were a less exploitative version with the same market!
5 - dobies.co.uk
One for the gardeners out there. This is the website that will benefit from the first payout I get from dooyoo. I took on an allotment last year and whilst it was harder work than I thought given that I ended up single and managing the poor soil on my own, I did ok. Next year I can't wait to live off the produce, and the motivation behind my reviews is to raise money for seeds to do so with new varieties and crops. Nothing makes imported supermarket veg taste more bland than something you've grown yourself, and this website has some great options.
6 - bbc.co.uk/news
Essential for dropping into the news on a superficial level when you don't have the time or space to indulge in a paper with comprehensive editorial.
7 - Boots.com
Great for the beauty product addicts - offering free delivery with orders over a certain amount, this is a great option to get your essentials delivered to you or to your work address. You can also collect your points, search for offers and maybe find products you wouldn't have thought of trying when getting barged about during the weekend shopping scrum.
8 - iTunes store
Not really a website as such but you can probably appreciate why I've chosen it. Sometimes a song grabs you and you have to have it available straight away - this is a relatively affordable way to fix that itch even if you intend to order the album including that random song in future.
9 - bbcgoodfood.com
I love to cook and I have a multitude of cookery books, but sometimes you need to act quick but still want a feasible and satisfying kitchen effort on the table in the fairly immediate future - this is the place. Also good for competitions. Well laid out, easy to use, but can sometimes be clunky and slow.
10 - dooyoo!
As I've said, this is funding my seed buying for the 2012 growing season. I suspect it'll be the best invested money ever, and it's worth the work writing and also reading all of your thoughts and experiences. A great website powered by the minds of really great people. Rock on.
