Advantages: Each offers something different
Disadvantages: As they are my top 10 they may not be to your taste!
I can hardly remember life before the internet... I must have visited literally hundreds of sites since first taking that giant leap into the virtual universe that is the world wide web - along the way I've come across some really poor sites, but that's not why I'm sat here writing this today... no, today is the day to give you my current top 10 websites! www.yahoo.com My first port of call on a daily basis. I have a yahoo e-mail account that I use as a secondary e-mail for when I'm signing up for things on line and engaging in one of my current hobbies - comping. Yahoo provides an e-mail service that I can best describe as trouble free, easy to use, and works for me. In addition to the e-mail service, I also like to use the yahoo online games facility to indulge in a spot of Literati (kind of like Scrabble), and Word Racer (similar to Boggle). www.loquax.co.uk As I mentioned above, one of my hobbies is comping. For the serious 'comper' Loquax is completely indispensable. Literally hundreds, if not thousands of current competitions on the web are listed on this site in an easy to use directory. The site also has a very useful built-in competition tracker, that, if you are a registered user, you can use to keep track of what you've entered and what you've not entered. For the regular comper this is extremely useful, as most competitions have a one entry per person clause and this prevents you from accidentally entering twice! www.google.co.uk Probably the best search engine on the web. With the facitilty to search for web pages and images, (as well as groups and directories), Google is great at finding what you want. I've used Google to look for allsorts in the past and have always found what I want - from a picture of a British Sugar lorry (for a uni assignment), to vegetarian recipes! www.shopsmart.co.uk If I'm after a book, cd, game or film I t
end to use Shop Smart to find out where I can get it cheapest! Shop smart lets you type in the name of a product you're after and then searches numerous websites and gives you a list of where you can get the product from, how much it costs, how much delivery is, how long it will typically take to get to you, and the total cost, as well as a star rating for each of the suppliers it lists. Although I tend to use it for the small items I've mentioned, Shop Smart is also able to search for a multitude of things, from Household bills, to clothing, to football and sport, to motoring, electronics and mobile phones. www.bbc.co.uk Everything that is related to the BBC in any way can be found on this site. The homepage offers links to a variety of categories such as Radio, Games, Teens, Learning, Soaps and Sports as well as others. One particular useful feature on the BBC homepage is that you can get a five day weather forecast for your town (or any other town for that matter) which often comes in useful and is much quicker and local that watching out for the weather forecast on the TV. www.freeukstuff.net Well, who doesn't like a freebie?! This website is regularly updated and provides links to other sites offering anything for free. The site is clearly laid out and very simple to use, and it's free to use. I have received a variety of worth while freebies as a result of this site, including cinema tickets, product samples, coupons, and chocolates. The type of freebies on offer is entirely dependent on what other sites are offering as free gifts at the time, so this site is worth checking on a regular basis. www.nacc.org.uk Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with a condition called Ulcerative Colitis. The NACC is the National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease. Their website is full of information on the disease itself, information on research that is currently being carried out, s
upport services, information on becoming a member of the NACC and lots more information that I have found of use since being diagnosed. This site is perhaps not likely to be of interest to the majority of people, unless you know of someone who has Crohn's or Colitis, however, if you've not heard of the conditions before you may find it interesting to take a look. http://us.imdb.com/ The Internet Movie Database. If you want to know anything about any film (or most TV programmes) you can find it here. From factfiles on actors, to memorable quotes from films, to taglines from your favourite movies. This database is absolutely huge and is guaranteed to be able to provide you with an answer to any question you have that is film related. Although this is a US site, it is of just as much use here in England. www.myvoice.co.uk An opinion site... but not at all like dooyoo. On this site you register to take part in surveys. When you visit the site you'll be presented with a list of the current surveys - clicking on their titles enables you to fill them in. You need to register with the site in order to take part, but registering is free and painless! For the majority of surveys offered on the site you earn points. As the points in your account add up you can exchange them for vouchers! You need 2,000 points before you can claim a £20 voucher, but points add up quickly if you're a regular visitor to the site. www.cybercandy.co.uk To be honest, I've never actually bought anything from this site... though I'm sure it won't be long before I do... however, being a chocoholic I can find myself wasting ages browsing this site looking at all the delicious sounding chocolates! It's like window shopping for me really, though you don't have to leave your home. The only thing that has stopped me spending here so far is I'm too tight to pay the delivery cost, so I'm waiting unti
l I've got a bit of spare cash and can put in a decent sized order to make the delivery cost worth while! Not only does this site satisfy the chocolate lovers cravings though - it also shows you what sweets you are missing out on (or lucky not to have) from all over the world. You can browse and purchase sweets produced in the UK, Japan, USA, Australia, China, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada... so if you fancy trying Japanese Salty Plum Sweets or maybe something even more extreme like Ant chocolate or a chocolate coated scorpion you'll find them available here too! So - that's my list... My top ten is always changing, but these are the sites I find myself visiting most at the moment. Thanks for reading... Angeelu :o)
