Advantages: Speed, Price, Control

Disadvantages: .com's not the cheapest

Forget all the old reviews of 123-reg, the fact is that they are the best company to deal with when it comes to registering domain names.

Both 123-reg and their parent company, Webfusion, have recently been taken over by Pipex. I used to like their service anyway, but I like it even more now!

I have been dealing with 123-reg for a couple of years now and would highly recommend them. Why? a few reasons:

1) Speed. They get your domain name registered quicker than anyone else I know. I recently registered a .uk domain name and TEN MINUTES later I checked the name at the Nominet web site. It had already been registered!

2) Reliability. I've never had a site go down or a domain name fail on me.

3) Price. £6.09 is a very small price to pay for a .uk domain name for two years registration, and £10.56 is not bad for a .com (for a year).

4) Control. The domain name is registered in your name. You can change almost anything you want to about the domain name, including the name servers, mail server, IPSTAG, and other DNS records. If your not familiar with these terms, beleive me, it's very useful to be able to change them and, with 123-reg, all changes are free of charge. It's also easy to change your contact details on the domain name and they even have a "whois opt-out" system where you can exclude your name and address from being published on the "whois" record.
In addition to all of this, it's very easy to change your web forwarding and e-mail forwarding options.

5) Value. With every domain name you get web forwarding, 100 e-mail forwarding addresses and an easy to use control panel, all free of charge.

Judging by the forums I read, 123-reg have a very good reputation with the internet community and I for one wouldn't use anyone else now.

Thanks for all the comments.

Eskimo - if you wanted hosting then yes, you'd have to pay more, but the review was only supposed to be about the domain registration service - hosting is a separate issue.

When it comes to renewal time, they notify you well in advance and you can choose to renew the domain or let it expire.

Crikey they sound quick. I had to wait over a week for my work one to be registered!

Quite a reasonable price for a domain name, but is this the only cost involved? or do you have to pay for hosting or anything else? What happens after the time expires, do you get notified that you have to suscribe again or could you suddenly lose the name without any warning?
