It is only possible to base a comment on your personal experience and in my case I found 192.com to be a waste of money. Their website indicates that if you purchase credits you can serach for a whole variey of information. I purchased credits and paid a further fee to access their extended Electoral Roll database. The results were poor and only a fraction of the information 192.com said it would supply was provided.Their customer support is poor.

what can i say about 192.com? well it is amazing. it costs 50p to find out the phone number of people, but with 192.com, you can do it for free. yes, FREE!!!. as well as giving you a map, it gives you detailed information including full name and address. It uses the UK electoral role, to find the details of all registered people over 18 living in the UK. It is totally free to sign up for this service, and is incredibly useful. you can check up to 20 names a month, which is a saving of £10 if you were to use the directory enquiries. anything that is free and this useful must be worth a look!!! I recommend it to anyone who likes a bargain, and needs to use this useful service.

192.com lets you search through telephone book databases and electoral registers. If you know a person's name you can find their address and telephone number - and more. At the simplest level it is a wonderful free alternative to BT's directory enquiries service and a quick easy way to track down long lost friends and family. But supposing you are the subject of the search? Most other reviewers have remarked that the person doing the search may not have honourable motives. There are nutters and stalkers out there, not to mention ex-lovers and enemies. That is why I strongly recommend you go and register at 192.com. You can tick a box when you register to automatically get an email whenever someone searches for you. The mail details the searcher's name, their email address and their IP address. This is what the notification looks like: "This message is sent to you from 192.com because your account data matches record requested from our database by this user: Name: Alan Q. Smithie Postcode: SW1 4RZ Country: United Kingdom E-mail: smithie@burbankmail.com IP address: 182.203.99.43 Date/Time: 19 January 2001 17:33 You may check full search log by going to http://www.192.com" When you register you can optionally give information that could be the subject of a search, including facts that might not be publicly available, for instance if you are ex-directory you can list your telephone number. If someone searches for that number they will not get any hits but you will still be notified that someone searched for that number. Registered details are kept confidential; they are not added to 192.com's searchable databases. 192.com is very impressive. You need to try it to see just how much information you can quickly find. A work colleague mentioned his hometown in conversation, I entered his name and town into 192.com and when he p aused for breath I surprised him with his home address, telephone number and wife's name. And that is with the free service. It is not infallible. It couldn't find a friend who isn't on the electoral register living in a house where the phone is in someone else's name, but if he had registered he'd know I was looking for him. There are many more powerful features, such as getting all the details of people living in a postcode, or neighbours of a target. You have to pay for these. There are silver and gold levels of service giving increasing power and flexibility at prices to match. You cannot stop people searching for your details, but by registering with 192.com you will be warned when someone is looking for you. (note: Alan Smithie and all his details are fictitious)

This is an excellent search engine if you want to find people or business. Anyone who is over 18 and on the electoral register you will be able to find on 192.com. It also will give you the address and a street map to find your way around. Basically, it’s the 192 service you get on your phone and when you pay national rate number but on the Internet it’s FREE. You can also do business search, phone number searches, the site has been improved and there’s a lot o new features added to it. I think the results are very good and there are very few dead links, it’s useful if you want a phone number of a shop you have bought something or want to track a friend down. You are required to sign-up and once you have you can start conducting your searches. I think you are only allowed 20 a month, and at the top of the screen it says how much you have saved. I have saved £9.20 which isn’t bad, so it will mean lesser phone bills for you who use the 192 service regularly from a land line or your mobile. Like many people I was shocked when I saw my own name on the internet, but it’s not a problem and I haven’t had any fan mail or any creepy people creepy people sneaking up on me. But, if you want to remove your name and information then you can by e-mailing or writing to the address given. This is a really good search engine, for names, phone numbers, addresses this has to be the best. The site is easy to navigate and it produces excellent results. Next time you want to find a number then look it up.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

192.com is similar to the BT telephone book. It will never be as up-to-date as BT's fone book or their online directory by definition but it's useful for finding people. The BT online directory doesn't have the human brain accessing it so it's very black and white. It will only bring up what you ask for and won't check either side of an entry to see if you perhaps have misspelled something. 192.com can search for similar names and will often bring up quite a few more using it's own "initiative" tha the BT online service will. 192.com offers a telephone directory that can be 2 years out of date. I know friends of mine have used it and found addresses of their own on there from a couple of years ago that are now out of date. It has an address for me that is over 3 years out of date. It also tries to find email address for the people you are searching for, but I've yet to find that facility useful. It doesn't have my email address listed for me, even though I've been using the same on for over 3 years. Quite honestly though, I'm GLAD it can't find my email address or anyone elses for that matter. Yes, I know we all post our email address here and there on the Net for one thing or another, but I really don't want anyone at all being able to find it on such a massive database, the database that allegedly led Jill Dando's murderer to find out where she lived. The homepage USED to be simple, but it's been updated over the last year and is annoyingly cluttered. You have to register now. You can choose from several different levels of membership - more about that later - but suffice it to say, the more you pay, the more information you have access to. When you input a name to search for, it will bring up a lot of entries to browse though, which is helpful. You can just enter surname if you want. Successful searches will show you names and address AND telephone numbers. It will also search the electoral role for people and addresses which I find quite scary really. You don't have much chance of remaining anon/ex-directory if someone searches for you using this facility. 192.com is no longer free and unlimited. You can make a certain number of searches a month for free, 20 I think. After that you either have to wait until the next month or pay for more. Personally, I wouldn't trust these people with my credit card details to buy more searches as they are also the makers of the UK Info Disk - they put all the info on 192.com onto a CD which can be purchased by anyone. The layout is complicated and not totally clear. It's easy to do a search straight away without realising that you need to register first. And on the subject of registration, are you sure you want these people to have your details (see paragraph above)? Having said all that, it IS useful if the BT site doesn't come up trumps for you as the search parameters are wider. It's slower than the BT site, but not by much. The pages are cluttered and there are irritating adverts all over the place. The BT site seems quite tranquil compared to 192.com I do use this site for genealogical purposes - but not very often. I browse through to see if there are any people with my surname in certain areas and once in a while I write a formal letter explaining who I am and why I'm contacting them. None of them have ever written back! The aforementioned feature of being able to browse lists of names rather than have your search limited to just what you ask for IS the redeeming feature of 192.com The rest of it is worrying.

              Disadvantages

I decided to pay this site a visit after reading a view from another dooyoo user. I found it a little unhelpful at first when manovering my way around the site. It is a site that bases itself on the 192 telephone facility that we all have, where the operator can search for telephone numbers for you if you give a certain amount of information. Such as name, partial address of the person you are trying to contact. The only difference is the telephone search costs you money on your telephone bill. The internet search is free. Well if you register with them (free of charge and just name and email address necessary). They will give you 20 free searches a month. Not bad as I consider myself a normal person....no coments please. And I don't use the telephone service that much in a month. So it is a bargain. It takes a little getting used to. And once you have used it a couple of times you will find it is quite easy. It also gives you the opportunity to search the electoral role. And look at ariel photos taken of the place where the person lives or even give you a map showing you how to get there. Other services on this website include: Business Directory Family Search People Finder Route Finder and Jobs I have yet to look at these parts of the site but will update this opinion with any further tips if necessary once I do. This site is well worth a visit!

Sometimes you may want to ring 192 to find a friend’s address, but you need no more, now you access the service via the Internet by visiting the web page. And it is Free, hence you don’t have to pay for anything in contrast to if you were ringing where it would cost you quite a bit as it is national rate. If you register at the site by completing a simple form, which lasts two minutes, you then have twenty free searches a month, and at the top of the page it tells you how much the site has saved you. You can search anyone’s name that was on the electoral register last year. I do however have some reservations about the site as it tells you where you can find anyone, by guiding you with a map. It feels a bit weird knowing that anyone can search your name but that is technology, the inconvenience caused by ringing up is reduced with this site. This site can come in handy if you want to track a friend down, and you know what area they live, this site helps you to find where they live.

If you have access to the internet, and want to save money on your phone bill, next time you want to ring 192 from a land line or a mobile, don’t bother. Not only do you get charged a national rate, which in my opinion is way to much. Why pay when its FREE on the net, just visit 192.com and do your search there. All you have to do is register yourself, which is quite simple. Then, you have access to twenty free searched per month. It can save you a lot of money. I first visited this site a couple of months ago. At first I was quite shocked, I never knew that I was on the Internet, that my address could be accessed by anyone. It did really shock me. How could people display your details without your permission. It worried me for a while, this was a site I visited by fluke. There must be other sites with our details on. Do we really want that, well I didn’t. But I just left it its not as if I have got anything to hide. For people who do not want to have their details on 192.com you can make yourself ex-directory by e-mailing or writing to them. Anyway it was quite fun searching you’re friends details. It even gave you a map of where the street was all the road names, the nearest attraction etc. So, it was quite detailed. This site is great if you have lost a friend and want to find them. It contains all the people on the electoral register, so if they are on the electoral register list they will be on it. Of course you can use the site to get phone numbers of places you want. The site is very well laid out and is easy to use. When I connect to the site, I get automatically logged on which is good. I really think that in a couple of years the internet will be used for everything. You can already phone people for free using your PC now you can save more money An excellent site well worth visiting if you want a phone number. I, have saved over £12.00 already.

A few monthes ago I conducted an experiment. I tried a number that I knew was not ex-directry and see if I could find it on the 192 website. I gave a full name and county. Nothing comes up. When I give the same information over the phone, they have information. I also think it is stupid of BT to charge users to use 192.com as there are sites on the internet where you can search for people in the United Kingdom for free and get just as good results as phoning 192 or going to the website. BT, stop being tight, give us 192.com for free!

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

                  192.com [Background: To the many people who have heard of the website www.192.com, but who have never used it, the main benefit would appear to be the handy way to avoid paying BT for their directory enquiries service. However, in reality this is an extremely useful site that can offer you so much more]. There is now a way to avoid BT's exorbitant charge for trying to find out a UK telephone number. If you call 192 via a domestic telephone line you will be billed 47p for the privilege of discovering information that is classed as 'public domain', as it is printed in telephone directories. 192.com allows you to search the entire telephone directory database to find out these same details. However, do not be alarmed about any data protection issues as this information is in the public domain anyway, and let's face it until recently it was possible to make a free '192' call from a telephone box anyway. Anyone who does not wish to be listed in the telephone directory can be removed at their request, thus becoming ex-directory. This choice is open to all households and many people choose to take this route. If you are ex-directory your details are not available via the 192.com website. Also, this information cannot be downloaded as huge lists for telemarketing, and is simply a single household look-up tool. It stands to reason that 192.com is undoubtedly useful for finding out telephone numbers. However, to paraphrase the legendary magician Paul Daniels, not a lot of people know that this site also has numerous other uses over and above telephone number searches. Once registered you can the functionality of this site for free - to a degree. The registration process takes a matter of seconds, and does not require all your personal details such as address or telephone number (but does require you to enter your postcode). The main problem with the site is that if you use it a lot, then you will n eed to upgarde your basic registration and pay a monthly charge. This will happen after a relatively small number of searches (20 in one calendar month). This method of operation is obviously planned to increase revenue by charging heavier users of the service, but also to discourage casual users from performing hundreds of searches free of charge. However, it is to be remembered than no user is able to perform any searches at all until they have registered with the site. In addition to the telephone number search, users are also able to trawl the vast electoral roll database, which again is public domain information and available at local libraries. Other useful facilities such as local maps, route planners, aerial photos and business information make this website an extremely useful resource. As a freebie site 192.com is well worth a visit, and if used sparingly could prove to be very useful. However, beware further use of this site as it could prove costly to upgrade to enable more frequent use - to the tune of £50 or more each month. I doubt whether many users would be prepared to pay this, although some business may find it to be of use. Nevertheless, to the occasional home user www.192.com is certainly one site that is worthy of a place in the favourites section of your internet browser. {An opinion by Blackjane - 2000}

192.com is certainly a worrying site. The potential for abuse is enormous. I have just done a ckeck on a cousin that I haven't seen for many years. Now I know who he lives with, the fact that they don't have the same surname, so they are probably not maried. I also accessed a map of the area and details of how to get there. None of this information is of any importance but it does prove just how easy it is. To use the site you have to sign up. I wonder if providing the information they require means that there are even more details about you available on the site.If you try this service out it might be safer to use a fictitious or sufficiently shortened address. I certainly wouldn't give them my phone number.

                      Disadvantages

I have been told about 192.com by friends who have been concerned about this website. Prior to that I remember reading about it in regards to the investigation into Jill Dando's murder. To me this website is frightening. You can easily look up someone's address for free, providing that you have a reasonable idea of where they live. To try it out I had a search for a friend I knew from university. From details as vague as his name and the location of London (a city where eight million people lived the last time I heard) I was given an address and a phone number. Of course it might not have been him, but it probably was. It is not just that they print your address details. They give you a map showing where it is, the option to get directions to that place, and aerial photographs of the area so you can find your way around. I really do not know what the producers of this site are trying to achieve. At best it is a tool to help people get back in touch with each other, but surely people use this for much more sinister means? What if I offend someone and they decide to go looking for me? It is a pretty frightening thought and from what I hear there is no chance of this site being shut down. Very worrying indeed.

Start with the BT phone book, add a map facility, link to the electoral role, do some clever processing and you'll have 192.com. Essentially 192.com is a comercial website offering good quality info on anyone or any company in the country. For your search you'll get addresses, maps, phone numbers where avaliable, info on neighbours, and even an aerial photograph (if they've got round to that bit yet!). I needed to track down some old friends a few months back but had no direct contact information, i just knew where they lived (roughly). A search by surname gave me a few options, one was them but unfortunatly it they were ex-directory and therefore no phone number was listed. Happily 192.com have done enough processing to spot that 1 of them worked from home and had a business line registered at that address too ... very useful indeed. Sadly (as with most 3rd party "public information" sites) the information can get a little out of date, but even still ive found it more useful than BT's number search website. Oh - and the best thing - its a comercial website by you get £20 worth of searches a month enough for any non-comercial user i think.

I actually think this site has scared the willies out of me. I've found it so scary that if I were of a more sensitive disposition it would have given me nightmares. 192.com is basically directory enquiries, electoral rolls and a fidning-long-lost loved ones site all rolled into one. You get 20 free searches a month to find phone numbers etc. If you sign up for the other levels of membership, costing anything from a few quid to a couple of hundred quid, you can locate people via the electoral roll. This is fine if you have hundreds of long lost relatives that you're trying to track down so you can share your lottery winnings with them, but if like me you don't want all and sundry from your past knowing where you are now, then it's scary. The only consolation that I can take is the hope that people won't be too eager to part with their hard earned £200+ to find people. I for one have people in my past that I hope I never set eyes on again (a nasty violent ex being one of them) but this site makes it potentially very easy and quick to find people. This site serves to remind us all that in the new age of technology, nothing is sacred and there is nowhere to hide. I'm actually giving serious consideration to losing my vote and coming off the electoral list in order to try and preserve some sort of anonimity.

Do you ever get fed up when you can't find a phone number, and think, do I have to call 192 and pay the ridiculous price? You don't need to phone up, you can access 192 through the www. Searching different options and areas are a few of the options available with 192. So if you have a free internet server or you are on a low cost internet access, the cheaper way to find out a lost number, or new number is quite simply by using 192.com. I actually stumbled on it while trying to find links to tracing some of my relatives. I'm probably the last person to know about it, but I am very glad I do know it now. It proved highly successful for me and gave me numbers of family who we were looking for. Obviously it turned up with the goods for me so I will highly rate it, however I'm sure other people have their own opinion of it. www.192enquiries.com
