Having used the web I've come across many, many search engines, in my opinion Alta Vista is the best you can get.
The reasons for this opinion are as follows:
Alta Vista is a very quick search engine, the search results are well laid out, unlike many search engines which can be very confusing with cluttered layout of results.
With Alta Vista the actual results tend to match what you are looking for, again a lot of search engines come up with sites that have got absolutely nothing to do with what you have told them to search for.
So, in conclusion, if you want a fast, well designed and easy to understand search engine that actually delivers what you want, then try Alta Vista.
