Advantages: Good for a laugh, alright to post your picture if you are the most handsome/prettiest person on earth...

Disadvantages: No so good if you're likely to take it all too seriously...

Well, that is for you to decide really, as I do not have a picture anywhere, I find that you really have to work this question out from the opinions I have written, and are about to write.

But really, what a strange question! It’s seems to me that dooyoo have set up a new section about your looks, and what you think of yourself. Could be a good idea, but I suspect that most people (except the very vein) would mainly say how ugly/fat/small/skinny/spotty (circle which applies to yourself) they think they are. Anyway, I have to be honest, I am not writing about that, I am writing about the website which may come close to that,

www.hotornot.com.

There is a simple way of describing this website, people post pictures of themselves onto the site, that is taken from wither a website or even a digital camera, so that people can rate how good looking they think the subject is.

When I first went onto the site, and I admit after a while you do get addicted before realising it is a load of rubbish, I thought that it was quite hard to work, but then, I am a total dimwit when it comes to things like that.

Across the top of the first page, is a bar with numbers on, ranging from 1-10, 10 as you probably guessed being ‘hot’ and 1 ‘not’. Underneath this ‘bar’ and many advertisements (which are pretty annoying because I don’t think they are really read that much – mainly being ones such as ‘Join up with your old school friends with Yahoo! Etc, etc) you will see a picture. This is what you are meant to be rating. When you click on a rating, the next photograph will show and so on.

I sometimes found that it was hard to see whom you were rating, as some photographs showed groups of people or couples. There is a section on the website where you can choose men only or women only, therefore you can only rate the opposite/same sex according to your choice.

I think that
a lot of the time, people can be pretty stingy when rating photographs, or even very nice. Sometimes, when bored, I decided to give the most beautiful women 1s, plainly because I’m horrible and cannot face them being that good, and the most atrociously horrid old men 10s, because you know that they will never get this rating otherwise.

After rating the pictures, an average rating comes up if the person/alien has had enough ratings. I think this is quite a good feature of the website, as you can see how horrible people are in true life.

I have noticed that I suspect mainly men; rate women down if they are with another man, that looks at all like it could be a partner. This is even in the case of an arm shown wrapped around a waist or something like so. I guess this may be the same the opposite way round but I do not think that women mind so much about the odd hand resting on a shoulder. People have to remember, it is the person they are rating, and not the environment they are in.

On some occasions though, I have seen people use this way of rating to get higher votes, such as I have seen young children as the main article of the photograph. This I must point out is illegal in terms of amihotornot.com it is also the case of pornographic photographs etc. There is a place where you can alert the webmaster to this, which I think is quite good, however, even though I’m sure the site has millions of photos submitted each day, I think they site could take more care of what they allow into the site.

One thing I like about the site is that you can see how long ago and how often the person who has submitted the photograph has logged in to see how they are being rated. If a person has done a lot of logging on, then it is easy to see that they are perhaps ‘paranoid’ about what people think of them, which brings me onto some thoughts about a few people who have submitted photos.

I am sure that in most cases th
e photos are submitted for fun, but for others, it seems that if you look closely, a lot of people are putting on a fake grin and underneath do not seem all that happy. I cannot say why, obviously, but I think that sometimes the website is bad in the sense of that fact.

A lot of photos I think have been added onto the site as a joke, the person not being his/herself, perhaps a friend or a relative, or even an enemy. In a lot of respects, the subject in the photograph may take this well, in others it may not be such a good outcome. Reading comments on some reviews on Amihotornot.com I think that some people can make awful mistakes by doing this.

I haven’t myself put any photographs on the site, but I do know of someone who has, and she did become a bit upset after having quite a few low ratings. Which is another reason why I think amihotornot.com is not always such a good idea. Can it really cause depression?

I know that after a while that some photos become ‘rejected’ as such, and stop being shown on the screen. This must be annoying for the people who’s photos they belong to, because they must feel like they have put themselves on a website for nothing.

I cannot really give much more information; only a little advice if someone is wanting to put themselves onto the site.
1) Do not take the rating too seriously, mainly because a lot of people are pretty stingy when rating. Personally, I would say that if you are given a 10, people are joking around, as if you were given a 1. No one can be that bad or indeed good. I would think that about a 7 or 8 are pretty high, and not many people really give that low a rating, for the simple reason that that is too cruel.
2) I would also say that if you want to put someone else on, then make sure they know, or if you can’t do that, then make sure that there is no way that they can find out, for example, don’t say “There’s this great new si
te called amihotornot.com where you rate people’s looks”
3) It’s an old cliché, but it really is the personality that counts and not the looks.

And there I end my opinion…

Hope you enjoyed it,

Great op - Moatymoo, try hotornot.com now. It seems 'Am I' has fallen out of favour with the wrong person. ;o)

I find the Americans generally seem to be a bit generous with their votes.
Or am I just a miserable git??
