Very prompt service, rent DVDs on-line from Blockbuster
Member Name: julwhite
Advantages: Wide number of DVDs, prompt turnaround
Disadvantages: Not quite as many DVDs as some other rental services
This review is for the DVD service operated by Blockbuster, where you rent DVDs which are sent and returned by post in exchange for a monthly fee.
The system of renting DVDs via the post has really increased in the last few years, with more and more companies offering the service, although there has been some merging of the companies recently. But in short, you pay a monthly fee, choose which package you want, and then you get sent the DVDs, which you watch and then return using the freepost envelopes.
There are a range of services available, of which lovefilm.com is probably the best known, Cinema Paradiso is another. I thought however that I would try a free trial with Blockbuster to see what they are like, and I'm been impressed at the service.
With the free trial, you sign up, pay a pound (although they never actually charged me this) to check that your card is valid, and then you select which films that you want to rent. If you like the service, you do nothing, and you'll be charged a couple of weeks later. In the free trial, you are allowed an unlimited number of DVDs, but you can only have out two DVDs at a time.
There are a vast number of DVDs available with the service, whether you like films, comedies, box sets, and indeed, nearly any DVD every released! You select which ones that you want to rent, and they appear on your rental list. It's best to give a reasonable selection of over ten at least, so that there's always something they can send you.
I've only just completed my trial period, but I was pleased to see that the DVDs that I put at the top of my rental list were the ones sent first. I found that lovefilm often struggled to send the ones I wanted, maybe they just had more customers per DVD or I just got unlikely.
I also seemed to have some delays in getting lovefilm DVDs, which is why I wanted to try someone else, and I've been pleased with Blockbuster's speed. If I returned a DVD on a Monday for example, I'd get the return DVD in the post arriving on Wednesday, so their turnover of DVDs is very prompt.
An additional benefit of using Blockbuster is that they offer free rentals from their store as well. Depending on your package, you can get free rentals, or buy one, get one free. If you live near a Blockbuster, this is quite a useful addition that the other services don't offer. You can't though return DVDs from the postal service to the actual shops.
The package sizes vary from rent one DVD at a time to a total of two exchanges, which costs 4.99 pounds a month, right through to renting five DVDs at a time with an unlimited total, and getting 2 free in-store movie rentals for 27.99 pounds a month. There are thirteen different packages at the time of writing, so there is a good choice.
It's worth shopping about for discount codes as well, as quite a few people have been able to get themselves a four week trial of the service, and then discounts beyond that point. So if you can get a couple of free weeks extra, you may as well!
Overall, I've been impressed with the service. It's prompt, the web-site is easy and fast to use, DVDs have been sent quickly and everything has worked. Nothing's gone wrong yet, but I have the confidence in the site to fix anything that does happen. So far, so good!
Summary: Pleased with service so far, very efficient and will stick with it!
