Brilliant - saving me money on buying DVDs every month!
Member Name: joey92
Advantages: Large selection, can take a payment holiday, good value for money if you use it frequently.
Disadvantages: Sometimes takes a while to get your next title through, incidences of scratched discs.
--What you get--
Depending on which package you choose you get an assortment of DVD rentals through the post as prior selected by you and added to your DVD rental list.
The choice ranges from £4.99 for two movies a month if you don't watch much, to the 3 at a time unlimited movies & games at £14.99 a month. I went with the £9.99 2 at a time unlimited package.
--Value for money--
Depends how much you will use the service, but I get out a new DVD at least once a week so it is great value for me.
--My personal opinion--
Having heard pretty bad things about most of the film rental services such as Netflix and Lovefilm, I was scouring the web for a DVD rental service and came across the well known Blockbuster. I was enticed to their site by the 14 day free trial, and after this was a quality service, decided to go for the "unlimited 2 at a time DVD rental package" for £9.99 a month, which I consider value for money considering that it would cost £3 a DVD at the library and approximately £8 in the shop per DVD and I don't often watch films twice unless they are really, really good so it isn't worth me owning loads of DVDs as I don't have enough space for them at my new place!
They send out your (in my case 2) DVDs at a time in a little blue plastic envelope with return postage pre-paid on the card - this is something else you're paying for.
I have had a little trouble with two consecutive scratched discs from their service (this was the same title) in the last week, but this is the first time I have had this problem. When this happens, they send you a complimentary extra disc, and it is just a matter of filling out a short "damaged disc" form on their site to explain.
The only main negative for me is remembering to post the DVDs back as there aren't any conveniently located post boxes near my house so it's a matter of remembering to do it! The time between posting it back and getting your next title is a fairly slow process, which is why I would highly recommend you go on one of the multiple title packages (like my 2 discs at once one).
You can also get games out on the site, if you're into gaming, which I'm not particularly.
I chose to go with an online provider as there are no DVD rental shops in my town, apart from the library which is slightly overpriced for one weeks rental and I would be forever paying overdue charges as I have a scatty memory for taking library stuff back, even though the library DVD catalogue is surprisingly up to date. The beauty of the Blockbuster rental service is you can keep the disc as long as you like, so if you forget to watch it within a week or you're too busy, there is no problem!
Thanks to this brilliant online rental service, I have watched so many new movies that I have been wanting to see for ages and haven't had the cash to splash out on a DVD for! I highly recommend this service to anyone wanting to enhance their film knowledge, as they offer an impressive back catalogue of movies, or increase their home entertainment options.
I found the website accessible and very easy to use, simply search for a disc, add it to your rental list and rank your movie choices in order of preference for being sent out.
The Top Ticket feature is something you get twice a month or once a month depending on your package. This allows you to "favourite" a DVD and then Blockbuster guarantee to send that DVD out with your next delivery. This is great to prioritise new films that you really want to see!
Making a payment holiday is a good feature if you are actually going to be away for a week or two or simply want to take a break from the service. This is easily scheduled by going to the respective section under "My Account" on the site.
To cancel your subscription you have to ring up, I haven't done this so am uncertain how lengthy a process it will be, but I think you have to give 14 days notice before the next pay date.
What I love about this service is that I can be browsing HMV in town or chatting to a friend about films they recommend, hear a recommendation or read an interesting film synopsis in HMV, and as soon as I get to a computer, add it to my rental list and get the film! Very convenient, very good value for money.
--My analysis of competitors--
Lovefilm - Stop you in the street and harass you to sign up to their deal, which immediately puts me off. No personal experience with these, but there have been many bad reviews online where people complain that their selection of films is poor. However, one of my friends has been using them a while and hasn't had any problems with them. Their cheapest package is cheaper than Blockbuster at £4.99 a month. Offer DVDs and online streaming of films.
Netflix - Offered a 14 day free trial which I took after a colleague raved about them in the office. These were disappointing to say the least. The quality of streaming on any device (including Android tablets and mobiles) was good (if you install Silverlight or a special app), yet the choice of movies and series to watch was shockingly poor for £5.99 a month. My boyfriend & I had trouble finding even one thing we fancied watching from their back catalogue. So these were hurriedly discontinued after the free trial. The benefit of this package is that you can discontinue at any time, so by all means give them a try!!
With Blockbuster you have to give slightly more notice to discontinue your package, though it is possible to adjust your payment date if you're in a spot of bother, and they will just charge you up to the payment date (so the cost of the difference which is great) for this service. I thought this feature was excellent and is another reason why I think they're the best rental service on the market.
If you feel like you're not watching enough films and want to extend your choice of TV series beyond 4od & iPlayer then sign up now!! The best online DVD rental service out there.
Summary: The best DVD rental service on the market!!
