I was talking to a friend yesterday and she told me a horrifying story of her friend and the chatroom in yahoo. Her friend just got connected to the internet and thought the chat rooms were excellent. She was addicted to them, with 24 hour access she was on them most of the time she could find.

I can remember when I first got the internet I too thought chatrooms were excellent but soon the novelty wore off but for my friends friend it didn?t. It all started off as a bit of fun but after making friends with a few people on the net. She has now landed herself in serious difficulty. One of her so called internet friends gave her a sob story about her financial problems. Over a couple of months, the story grew and it all ended up with my friends friend agreeing to lend them a loan. How stupid. I know.

Not surprisingly she hasn?t heard from the person since and after sending numerous letters to the address she sent the cheque and emails she has no reply. My friend was saying she was adamant that she won?t go to the police since everyone will know how stupid she has been. She says its bought her back down to earth and she has learnt the hard way. Personally, I would go to the police or someone to retrieve the money that she has lost.

So chatrooms. Most of us have been on them. I can remember my first time. When someone said a/s/l I thought what the hell are they talking about. But it doesn?t take long before you catch on with all the terminology. And there?s quite a lot of it.

However, personally I think chatrooms are superficial. What I mean are that they are false. You can?t tell who?s talking the truth and there?s a lot of weird people on the net that you should stay away from. Here?s a few simple tips:
Never give your true details, especially your address phone number etc.
Never ever give your credit card details.
You may think you trust and know someone but you can?t be sure, people do lie so don?t be naive and th
ink someone on the end is being honest.

Never meet someone from the chatroom and if you decide you really must then meet in a public place during the day with a friend. And always tell someone where you are going and what time you will be back. Sound mothery but you never know.

Not all chat rooms or all people are chat rooms are dishonest but there are enough of them to be wary of. Use them for a bit of fun and you should be ok but for lasting friendship try real people!
